Op3n.net mixtapes

Op3n.net is a mixtape netlabel exclusively using music published under Creative Commons or similar licenses.

Here are two Op3n mixes for streaming or downloading by netlabel operators we love.

Mix by Otis Fodder, creator of Comfort Stand

"Comfort Stand is considered one of the basic chapters in the undefined history of the blurry netaudio phenomena. This netlabel from Montreal is RIP since 2006, time enough for Otis Fodder, the big name after it, to pick his favourite 120 minutes from its huge catalogue and blend them together in another exclusive mixtape for op3n.net. "Comfort Stand was an active Net Label from 2003-2006 featuring artists from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States. The label's 80 albums, 16 singles, and 8 compilations remain online, with MP3s hosted by The Internet Archive."

Mix by Marco Kalnenek, creator of WM Recordings

"Squeezing almost four years of WM Recordings history into a 45 minute mix is not an easy thing to do, but hopefully this mix gives at least an impression of the broad range of releases: from weird pop tunes to electronic soundscapes, and from free improvisation to electropop. So basically, this is a rather eclectic compilation. Entertainment for the whole family!"

Charlie Lewis

Charlie Lewis, 11-year veteran WFMU DJ, is wrapping up his WFMU career. Unless he decides to work a phone-in or prerecorded program into future schedules, Charlie's last WFMU show will be Monday, October 1, 2007 (next Monday).

For many of those 11 years, Charlie started the week with his Monday morning program. This lighthearted DJ made the coming workweek seem like cake, and to him I ever grateful. I remember finally being able to stream Charlie on the computer at work in 2002. It was a weird little player, remember? In years prior, I'd fumbled with knobs and antennae to try to tune into WFMU in steel and concrete corporate buildings.

("But, but, I don't want the corner office with a window. Thanks a bunch, maam and sirs, but I can only get WFMU in the cubicle by the elevators!")

Monday mornings will not be the same without Charlie's dry wit, casual style, tweaked out voice, spinning records backwords or at the wrong speed, droning over songs, flipping on the echo and all the other silliness that charmed listeners for all these years. He is a champ at blending old and new, mainstream and obscure. We are going to miss him, and hope that he keeps an active long-distance WFMU relationship.

All the best to Charlie and family in this exciting new chapter of their life!

"If you were familiar with my radio show on WFMU, you can expect more of the same: a freeform conglomeration of sounds, songs, and digressions.... The title of the program comes from a song by the Beach Boys (really just Brian Wilson) called 'Busy Doin' Nothin'.'"

C'mon, Get Happy!

I've been medicated for eight days, so now that I am easing back on the web, I'm returning happy sounds I love. Here are places I return to for keeping ears happy!

..:::... Glubibulga's Suoni Scorretti. Slap-Press.com, home of such marvelous, gifted, Italian nuts as Okapi and Camilla Falsini, puts together great playlists. I've learned about fun new artists through them. You might want to check the archives, too. If you click "playlist & info," you will be led to the artists' cool websites. [stream #6]

Happy Birthday!

Extra special HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to Blogio teammates Perri and Fausto. Send them your happy regards or post a comment here for them. Perri's birthday is in late October and Fausto's is in early November. When is yours?

Comfort CakeThree years ago on this day, a wonderful project was born. It was Comfort Stand Recordings, a totally free netlabel. In its brief lifespan, that netlabel laid down the example for others to follow. Comfort Stand released 80 full length and 2-CD recordings, as well as 18 singles and EPs.

Birthday SongsTo celebrate its first anniversary "of being online, providing free music and sharing the love," artists put together a 2-CD celebration release on the label. Oddio Overplay celebrated by creating a playlist of more than 100 birthday songs found on the web. Three years later, only 65% of the songs were still there, so I updated it for you today. The list now weighs in with more than 200 birthday tracks. Play them for yourself on your birthday or your un-birthday!

Also, SongFight.org has a collection of birthday songs, Various Artists - Birthdays and Breakups.

WMWhile the Comfort Stand offices may have closed, the music is still available online. Equally important, the sister label, WM Recordings is still going strong. Marco Kalnenek [Weirdomusic] worked on and was a recording artist for Comfort Stand. It inspired him to create WM Recordings to release even more free and legal music to the world. They have already shared 52 releases. Happy Birthday to all of us!

Weirdomusic - Democassette

Weirdomusic - Democassette!!???

This morning, I woke up with the song "The Man with the Wooden Eyes" in my head. I couldn't remember who performed it. My sleepy head was rattling through all sorts of New Wave bands. Maybe it was the Urban Verbs, Ultravox, Chrome - who was it? So I did a search online and it turns out to be the awesome Marco Kalnenek, aka Weirdomusic, the brain behind WM Recordings, former project collaborator and one of my favorite people!

Here is his entire February 1990 Democassette!!??? release. I do not know whether this release predates his six years at the conservatory, but there are impressive keyboard segments here. I particularly like them towards the end of "Acid." I sure had fun revisiting this music. Enjoy!

Several tracks also appear on his A Piece of Weirdomusic History. These are the songs Marco contributed to weeks 26 of the fantastic 52 Weeks project from Splogman.com.

"Weirdomusic is the nom-de-plume of 35 year old Marco Kalnenek from Heerlen, the Netherlands. The name was first used for his 1992 cassette release Someweirdomusic and is now the name of Marco's website Weirdomusic.com and all related musical activities.

"Marco started playing the piano at age 9. His first band Foolish Behaviour was formed around 1982, when he started jamming and recording tapes with his pal "Deurie" (Marco Dörenberg) and assorted other friends. Hundreds of hours of music and other noises were recorded in the 12 years that followed. A few cassettes and cd-r's were privately released and a couple of tracks turned up on compilations made by other people.

"In 1994 Marco's interest in writing and recording music started to fade, mainly due to his bad experiences at the Conservatory of Music in Maastricht, where he studied jazz piano for 6 years between 1987 and 1993. Most of Weirdomusic's home recordings from 1982-1994 still survive [and are currently being transferred to archive.org].

"In 2001 two older recordings were remixed by Dutch musician Ton Rückert and Japanese dj Hideo Nakai for an as yet unreleased cd-compilation of Weirdomusic's work. Meanwhile Marco has been experimenting with pc based composing and recording. His first new recording in nearly 10 years was released on the Comfort Stand label in April 2004."

Happy New Year! part 2

Comfort Stand presents a compilation of versions of that old traditional Scottish tune that signifies and celebrates a new year, Auld Lang Syne released today, New Year's Eve 2005!

We decided to celebrate the changing of the year by asking artists from all over the world to take the song most associated in people's minds with New Years Eve (the old Scottish song 'Auld Lang Syne'), and to provide their interpretations of the tune. Our new compilation release "Auld Lang Syne' is the result of that invitation!

Love Those Records

Packing up all the records. How I love them so! WFMU Station Manager Ken posted a set of record related mp3s on Beware of the Blog after the record fair. I've got two more record related tunes for your collection.

By the way, that little record store photo is from a newstand, smokeshop, dime store in Owego, New York. This shop is significant, because it is where Moondog [avant-garde composer and musician Louis Hardin] landed after his bus trips from New York City to get to his cabin upstate in Candor. Love Moondog, love Owego, love this weird little shop.

You Got a Lotta Nerve

R. Stevie Moore's rendition of the Bob Dylan classic "Positively 4th Street" has been streaming off and on in my head since Irwin Chusid played it on his show back in July. His upbeat version of this downer song is simply contagious! Little did I know the mp3 is available on RSM's site. Did you know R. Stevie Moore has an entire download section? How did I miss that? Guess I was more caught up in the whole history of his cult hero status.

Here is one of my most beloved and most quoted [almost daily] RSM tunes, and you can download that whole release from Comfort Stand Recordings!

Feeling Chatty?

It's you! So, how are things? We don't chat much anymore. Yeah, with all that busy busy busy life stuff going on daily. I mean, who has the time, right? It's nice that we can take this moment right here and catch up and dish the dirt, sugar!

Hey, did you hear about Weirdomusic.com? I know, fabulous, right? They work to keep up on the vinyl sharity community, and even share their own recordings. Hell, they have found sharity folks that I have never met. Will have to mingle and add them to the Sharity Living Rooms at Oddio Overplay.

Well, darling, all I know is that Weirdomusic also has that terrific netlabel, WM Recordings. Oh, you know it? Terrific, right? Yes yes yes. Well, did you get to hear that African one? Really? There have been 5 releases since that one? Wow!

Yeah, you are so right, Comfort Stand Recordings is fabulous, too. The catalog just hit 60 releases. Believe that? The last five have come together just this Summer. Too amazing. You love it? Oh me too, honey!

I saw that Vagina Jones is coming - ha - to Comfort Stand soon. At first, I was thinking, "Eewwww! Isn't she that Scientology cult loser?!" Then I remembered that was a chick named Vaginal, Beck's mom's pal. Nope, totally different gal. This is Vagina Jones. Phew!

Scientology is just evil. They prey on people who are trying to better themselves, then pull them into the cult before they know what's happening. It's like a deadly Amway. Dreadful. Slavery, physical and mental abuse, manipulation, brain washing.

You know, how far under someone's control do you have to be to believe that 75 million years ago an alien named Xenu dumped people at volcano bases, then nuked them, only to leave their spirits to inhabit Earthling's bodies and cloud their minds in the future? Whoa. (Oh, and by the way, many of those were not volcanos yet or ever!) Totally pulled from the twisted mind of second rate sci-fi writer Hubbard, and used as a money making tool. Super powerful. Stay away from that nastiness, but please do educate yourself, because they are everywhere.

Talk about going off on a tangent. Anyway, back to pleasant things! So, the newest releases on Comfort Stand are from Big City Orchestra, Full Load Of King, Puyo Puyo, Feverdreams and the loveable Fortyone. Yay!

Was it you who told me that Michael Leigh has a new blog? It's called Boot Sale Sounds, and it features novelty and comedy stuff found at boot sales, flea markets and charity shops. Sounds like fun! Jeremy is still plugging along bringing you music every day at Fingertips. Isn't he a darling? You know it!

Zenguin? Oh yeah, Zenguin and Oddio Overplay go way back. The Zenguin family rules.

Know who else is fabulous? You! Uh oh, there's your train! If you run, you might just catch it. Hey, it was great chatting with you. Let's get together soon. Wait, you didn't tell me all the juicy bits about your new crush. What about the job? Weren't you moving soon? Drop a note, cookie! Love ya!

Fizzy Phosphates

Soft Drink Jingle Jungle on Aircheck
on WFMU Thursday, June 23rd, 6pm - 7pm EST

Want a coke? Of course, the whole world does, and always did, thanks to the incessant piledriver ad campaigns that have been a part of radio and TV culture through the decades. Today we feature some highlights from amazing stream-of-consciousness collection of nonstop soda spew, released on the X-Static label a couple of years ago. Besides soda-shilling spots from the likes of the Troggs, Nancy Sinatra, Tom Jones, the Box Tops and more, there's plenty or random jingles presented in a rapid-fire production manner that makes it all into a mind-numbing blur. Prepare to have some of your deepest memories popped open.
[see also: WFMU's Ugly Summer Schedule, June 13 - October 3, 2005]

I don't get it about the fizzy sugar syrup water. Judging by what soda does to the body, it is probably best not to develop an addiction. How on Earth did the fizzy sugar water people become some of the most powerful, wealthy people in the world?

Here is an interesting little radio piece about the last of New York City's seltzer men. It is part of a series of short pieces about vanishing jobs in the Big Apple [all available in mp3].

Walter Backerman, Seltzer Man
Back in 1919, Walter Backerman's grandfather delivered seltzer by horse and wagon on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Today, Walter continues to deliver seltzer around the streets of New York. Some customers, like Mildred Blitz, have been on the family route for more than 50 years. When Walter's grandfather drove his cart there were thousands of seltzer men in the city; today Walter is one of the last.

Some soda songs to wet your whistle:

01. Pepsi Cola [via Vintage Broadcasting]
02. Ray Charles - Coca Cola [via Norman Barrington Archive]
03. The Supremes - Coca Cola [via Vintage Broadcasting]
04. Sandy Posey - Coca Cola [via Norman Barrington Archive]
05. The 5th Dimension - Coca Cola [via Norman Barrington Archive]
06. Petula Clark - Coca Cola [via Vintage Broadcasting]
07. Tequila and Squirt from Squirt soda company [via Oddio Overplay]

Soda on Comfort Stand:

Brand New Netlabel Releases

Here are some of the brand new netlabel releases at the Internet Archive. These are currently in play in our environments. The set opens up with R. Stevie Moore. Personally, I think his Comfort Stand release is more fun, but that may just be from overplaying it! The Winter Tales compilation is quite varied, so even if the first tracks aren't your cup of tea, you might get lucky! I'm feeling pretty lucky hearing all of these releases that I'd have never found without the Internet and the Internet Archive! Enjoy!

March 2005
"kevin (allthatfall) has a way with tiny sounds. his samples sometimes flow and sometimes fight - guitars crashing through a quintet of humming radiators or maybe the fey voices of children and passersby. it's probably because he sometimes records as panda kommander that i can't shake the image of monochrome figures of panda bears bubbling out of his synthesizers like so many angled bleeps and crackles... pandacore!"
