Oprah's Free Holiday Compilation

Oprah Winfrey is on board with free and legal music sharing with her Holiday Hits 2008. Okay, it is Oprah, but this comp has big names on it like Aretha, Harry Connick Jr., Brian McKnight and Tony Bennett. C'mon, folks, that makes it worthwhile, right? Non-christian friends, there are some secular winter selections on there for you, too.

Everyone, this eight song CD complete with cover and CD artwork is available for only a couple of days. It is part of Oprah's Have a Thrifty Holiday special. Learn how to have the thriftiest holiday ever on her website.

Oddio Overplay, Jamendo, Internet Archive's Netlabels collection and Free Albums Galore are great places to find whole albums that you can burn to CDs and share with family and friends for the holidays. They are all free, legally shared selections.

While seriously pro FREE MUSIC, we ask you to remember the musical artists who made 2008 a wonderful year for you. Make a donation on their website or purchase their music, t-shirts and gear. Remember to share the love with those who have brought you so much joy. Also, you might add them to your Amazon.com wishlist. Have you seen their new UNIVERSAL WISH LIST feature? It is awesome! It lets you go to the websites selling music by the artists you love and add their CDs with just a click! How cool is that?

Here's to a new year of great music!

Free Sample Zone Mirror

Chenard Walcker is the prolific visual and musical collage artist who operated the Free Sample Zone netlabel with 50+ releases available for download. When that domain expired, OddioOverplay.com created this mirror for the netlabel with the hope that Chenard's work will reach more listeners.

Chenard is slowly recovering from a coma. His family and friends report that he is not physically suffering, but that chances are that he will remain hospitalized indefinitely.

"Chenard Walcker is a French samplecore artist layering large slabs of pop music, obscure funk, soundtracks, etc. The site offers many albums worth of material as free downloads, as an anti-copyright stance. He also publishes the Free Sample Zone, which is all his material under several monikers...." -- official website

Organ Hemorrhaging Sonar and James Taylor?

UPDATE, January 2008: Letter from NRDC President 8 January 2008

James Taylor is asking concerned Americans to urge the U.S. Navy to abandon its proposal to put a training range for lethal mid-frequency sonar right next to a key migratory route for endangered right whales. Scientists have linked the use of mid-frequency sonar to hundreds of whale strandings and deaths around the world.

Navy warships use underwater speakers during routine sonar testing and training that blast the ocean with noise up to 245 decibels -- a sonic barrage roughly comparable to a Saturn V rocket at blast-off. That onslaught is so intense it can drive whales to panic and cause their organs to hemorrhage. Act now

(The National Resources Defense Council Action Fund will never keep, use or share the email addresses. This is the 2nd Blogio post on this concern this year. You can find the previous post here with more info and recordings.)

Me, I'm not a big James Taylor fan, but here are some "oceanic" sounds I do enjoy. After you visit the NRDC for a few secs to add your vote to Secretary Winter, please come back here to check out these releases:
