FMA New Webjay

Once upon a time, there was a website called Webjay that employed cutting edge software of the day to create playlists of music files from the web. Users were able to create, save, and share these playlists. Today, we have the Free Music Archive for making those mixes, playlists, mixtapes, or compilations.

The beauty of the remarkable music in your playlists at the Free Music Archive is that it is all free and legally shared. Copyright issues were always a problem with Webjay.

I loved Webjay. It was exciting to hear new music from people worldwide. My playlist of Brazilian music at Webjay went viral with online popularity and surprisingly landed in the New York Times in 2004. Yahoo purchased Webjay in 2006 and closed the site in 2007.

Today, the wonderful Free Music Archive offers us all a playground for creating playlists of music we enjoy for free. Those playlists can be embedded anywhere on the web. Playlists of compiled tunes are available for download with one click. That's just one of the many excellent features available at the FMA.

We all now have the power to create, share, embed, and download mixtapes and share new artists with our friends -- and all for free! Thank you, Free Music Archive! See you there!

[Fellow webjays, you can find Webjay on Facebook, and there is also a Webjay group on Facebook.]

I've been medicated for eight days, so now that I am easing back on the web, I'm returning happy sounds I love. Here are places I return to for keeping ears happy!

I've learned about fun new artists through them. You might want to check the archives, too. If you click "playlist & info," you will be led to the artists' cool websites. [stream #6]

But wait! There's more!

Lord Kelvin - The Frog Blues Experience
"This 'song' is a frankensteinian hybridic mixture of two previously uploaded open source audio recordings: the colorado river (frogs!) field recordings and Clarence Ashley's, 'My Sweet Farm Girl.' I finagled it around a bit to get it to sound interesting to say the least. I got it so the frogs seem to be singing along at times."

AK-Momo - Women to Control
"On the debut from this Swedish duo, the voice of Anna Karin von Malmborg floats coolly above a bed of music created using mellotrons and an Optigan. Think Joanna Newsom fronting Goldfrapp..."

Ready for something that might get radio play?

Nic Armstrong and the Thieves - If We Can't Escape, My Pretty
"Nic Armstrong and the Thieves embody the undying spirit of rock 'n' roll - fuzzed out guitars, raggedy drum kits, and spirited vocals are the rule of the day. Their new album 'The Greatest White Liar' blends rockers with tuneful ballads and jaunty dancehall numbers. "If We Can't Escape My Pretty" is a non-album track often performed in live sets. It represents the fresh energy of a band that's ready to take America by storm."

Arctic Sounds

Pine Lake Films made a lovely, instrumental short film titled Alaska, so you may experience the beauty and granduer of Alaska. [04:05 min]

:: stream the sounds in this post ::

"What would America gain by allowing heavy industry into the the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge? Very little. Oil from the refuge would hardly make a dent in our dependence on foreign imports -- leaving our economy and way of life just as exposed to wild swings in worldwide oil prices and supply as it is today. The truth is, we simply can't drill our way to energy independence.

"Although drilling proponents often say there are 16 billion barrels of oil under the refuge's coastal plain, the U.S. Geological Service's estimate of the amount that could be recovered economically -- that is, the amount likely to be profitably extracted and sold -- represents less than a year's U.S. supply.

"It would take 10 years for any Arctic Refuge oil to reach the market, and even when production peaks -- in the distant year of 2027 -- the refuge would produce a paltry 1 or 2 percent of Americans' daily consumption. Whatever oil the refuge might produce is simply irrelevant to the larger issue of meeting America's future energy needs."

Oil produced from the Arctic Refuge would come at enormous, and irreversible, cost. The refuge is among the world's last true wildernesses, and it is one of the largest sanctuaries for Arctic animals. Traversed by a dozen rivers and framed by jagged peaks, this spectacular wilderness is a vital birthing ground for polar bears, grizzlies, Arctic wolves, caribou and the endangered shaggy musk ox, a mammoth-like survivor of the last Ice Age.

:: Tony Sawyer - Alaska excerpt [Red River Country]

Why destroy America's foremost wildlife refuge for less oil than we consume in a single year?

:: Garritan Orchestral Strings - Arctic Caverns [official site]

With Congress about to decide the fate of the Arctic Refuge, environmental and grassroots groups have organized a massive rally in Washington, DC on September 20, 2005. More info at the Arctic Refuge Action Day website.

:: Chris Collins - Alaska [official site]

Due to the extreme cold, short growing season and nutrient-poor soils, Arctic vegetation is extremely fragile. Plant communities scarred by bulldozer tracks, oil spills and other human activities can take decades to recover.

:: Phoenx [Germany] - Quinn the Eskimo, Part II [official site]
:: Kanda - Arctic [Boptart]

At least five species of marine mammals live in or near the Beaufort Sea along the coastal plain's northern edge. These include spotted seals, ringed seals, bearded seals, beluga whales and endangered bowhead whales.

On Finding a 1986 Punk Mixtape

RuinOkay, so I am digging through the old cassette crates and spy a punk mixtape circa 1986. I see Philly punk band Ruin on it, and I smile thinking of AgentA the former lead singer. He now operates The Unofficial Ruin Site. He continues to make music, and also has a brainbending online radio show, Headtones, and puts together great playlists for you at Webjay. Thanks to AgentA and the Ruin crew, you can still enjoy some Ruin online. Be sure to check out other members' sites, too, including drummer Bloody Rich. [I cannot even start off on the Little Gentlemen tangent, another Bloody Rich band. Man, I love East Coast '70s and '80s punk. Thanks to Baltimore's defunct WCVT for sending it in the air to me.]

Cro-MagsAlso on the tape are NYC hardcore band the Cro-Mags. Wondering what they are up to these days, I seek their official site. Well, it seems that both founders Harley Flanagan and Parris Mayhew operate their own version of the official band website. Both are very cool. You should know that one of the sites offers THE AGE OF QUARREL LP online for free. After you enjoy it, you can purchase it from the other official site which is selling it for $12. That was a once a beloved album of mine. Track 9 "Hard Times" is a minute and a half of my sweet sixteen.

Allmusic.com: Before the Cro-Mags, the idea of combining heavy metal and hardcore together was unheard of. But with the release of their classic debut, The Age of Quarrel, hardcore-metal was born, and in its wake, came a legion of similarly styled offspring (Biohazard, Vision of Disorder, etc.). Although the group endured an endless amount of line-up shifts (which is probably the main reason they never became as well known as they should have), the Cro-Mags continued to record and tour in one form or another. Through it all, the New York City-based group's leader has been bassist Harley Flanagan, who in 1977 at the ripe old age of ten (!), started his first punk band during a European trip. Upon returning to NYC, Flanagan supplied drums for the Stimulators, a band that performed quite a bit locally and in Washington, D.C., alongside the Bad Brains. The early ‘80s saw the initial Cro-Mags line-ups formed, with a variety of members playing alongside the only constant -- Flanagan. By the middle of the decade, the best known Cro-Mags line-up was in place -- Flanagan now on bass, former Bad Brains roadie John Joseph on vocals, Parris Mayhew on guitar, and Mackie Jayson on drums -- who soon built a rabid following via shows at CBGB's.

Big Blue Marble

kids rock!
Big Blue Marble: kids rock! a growing list of kids making music

If you were a kid in the 1970s and early 1980s, you may remember an internationally syndicated TV program called BIG BLUE MARBLE. The "Dear Pen Pal" feature of the show gave children the opportunity to correspond by mail with children in other countries of the world. Many of those kids are still writing to one another today.

The Big Blue Marble soundtrack of songs sung by kids was released on A&M Records in 1974. Here is an ancient page with some show details that I put together in 1994.

In short, kids rock! Here are kids all over the marble making music of their own! [stream]

Know more cool kids' music on the web? Please post your link in the comments. Thanks!
