Op3n.net mixtapes

Op3n.net is a mixtape netlabel exclusively using music published under Creative Commons or similar licenses.

Here are two Op3n mixes for streaming or downloading by netlabel operators we love.

Mix by Otis Fodder, creator of Comfort Stand

"Comfort Stand is considered one of the basic chapters in the undefined history of the blurry netaudio phenomena. This netlabel from Montreal is RIP since 2006, time enough for Otis Fodder, the big name after it, to pick his favourite 120 minutes from its huge catalogue and blend them together in another exclusive mixtape for op3n.net. "Comfort Stand was an active Net Label from 2003-2006 featuring artists from Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Russia, United Kingdom and the United States. The label's 80 albums, 16 singles, and 8 compilations remain online, with MP3s hosted by The Internet Archive."

Mix by Marco Kalnenek, creator of WM Recordings

"Squeezing almost four years of WM Recordings history into a 45 minute mix is not an easy thing to do, but hopefully this mix gives at least an impression of the broad range of releases: from weird pop tunes to electronic soundscapes, and from free improvisation to electropop. So basically, this is a rather eclectic compilation. Entertainment for the whole family!"

Free Bubbles from Happi Tyme

WOW! It is indeed happy time, girls and boys! Happi Tyme Records, formed by Otis Fodder and Mildred Pitt five years ago, has a new face. Happi Tyme is home to Pitt and Fodder bands Twizzle, Library Science and The Bran Flakes. Here's your chance to buy CDs of more music from these artists who already share music online for free. Yay!

To celebrate the new look at Happi Tyme Records those kind folks are sharing a free collection of tunes with the world from The Bran Flakes called Bubbles! It is very silly, bouncy and joyful. Enjoy!

:: Twizzle were popular favorites on the Comfort Stand netlabel where they shared their Soda Fountain EP. The big news with Twizzle is that they are preparing a CD for release on Happi Tyme Records later this month! In addition to the netlabel release, you can also enjoy Twizzle sounds on their MySpace page and soon on their official site.

:: Library Science has a dub flavor. They described their musicmaking process as "write a song, build the arrangements inside their recording machine, then 'dub the song out' by deconstructing, processing and mangling the music through effects and experiments." Check them out at their official website or on MySpace for an audio preview. Library Science has released two CDs on Happi Tyme Records.

:: The Bran Flakes "combine sound-collage with live instrumentation resulting in a beat oriented blend of exotica, easy listening, children's music and experimentation, often with a humorous effect." We've bought their CDs, and what fun they are! We are especially fond of the fabulous Bounces!, a Happi Tyme Records release. It runs neck and neck with our other favorite, the less polished I Don't Have a Friend. Their I Remember When I Break Down release is available for download at the Comfort Stand netlabel. Just as with the other bands, you can also enjoy their music at their fun official website and their MySpace page.

The 365 Days Project v2

The 365 Days Project

One MP3 a day for one year. Otis Fodder produced the project in 2003 with the help of several curators. It was a noteable web phenomenon that earned accolades, united freaks for strange recordings worldwide and created countless more such people. It also sparked similar projects that united still more fans of outsider, rare and just plain weird recordings. Why, the project is even how Fodder met his lovely wife. The 365 Days Project is archived at UbuWeb and at WFMU.

The 365 Days Project v.2

Freeform radio station WFMU in the greater New York City metro area invited Fodder to revive the project for 2007. Daily entries are logged in their blog, and can be filtered out into their own pages. I am the curator of day seven.

Curators for The 365 Days Project v.1

Any leads on where to find the rest of these 2003 curators online?

Chenard Walcker Tribute and Love Letters

Marco of WM Recordings and Weirdomusic.com has passed along the news from Roy "Chicky" Arad that Chenard Walcker, a friend of the online music world, is slowly recovering from a diabetic coma. His brother reports that he is not physically suffering.

Chenard is the prolific visual and musical collage artist who operates the Free Sample Zone with 58 releases available for download (including one for Oddio Overplay.) So many of us have benefited from Chenard's work. This is our chance to repay our sweet friend and to send him our love.

"Chenard Walcker is the self-proclaimed Pope of samplecore, or, to put it simply, of musical cut-n-paste. Within a few years, he became a legend in the netlabel scene thanks to his prolific and virtuoso collages." -- official site

The last time I heard Chenard speak was last year for a get-well-soon radio show put together by Oddio Overplay and Shirley and Spinoza Radio for Otis Fodder.

Let's put together something of love and thanks for Chenard. Roy Chicky Arad [bio] has suggested a tribute album, and WM Recordings is organizing now to host it. It might also be simultaneous hosted elsewhere on the web.

So start making your songs, coloring your greeting cards and making your collages for Chenard now!

All responses should be directed to Marco.

More Halloween Audio

:: September post of Halloween audio

:: JohnRozum.com and Senses Working Overtime are both running Halloween treats for every day of October!

:: brainsaw - Music for the Paranoid Schizophrenic is a dark, industrial record with serious leanings toward Halloween. Despite the titles relating to Cold War Soviet times, such as "Stalin's Will," "Proletariat," "Gulag (Welcome to Hell)", "Patriots Make Great Cannon Fodder" and "Death to the Enemies of the People," this could very easily be added to your Halloween mix

:: Pieces of Flair hosting their Zombie Song Off, wherein contributors submit thier own zombie tunes! [I'm a sucker for strings, so leaning towards the lxox track. Oh but the metal, and the live one, and the faux '80s. Glad I get to love them all and not choose just one.]

:: NEW! Royal Oakland Gramophone Company presents "Hallowe’eny E’en"
a 3.5 hour Halloween special
Filed under: collage, noise, electronic, improvisation, live-mix, experimental, spoken, holiday theme

:: NEW! Yewknee.com's mixes Songs For Spooks and Pure Terror

:: Paul's Rambling's has posted this year's Halloween lounge mix, Music to Watch Ghouls By. Beware of the pumpkin martini!

AND, my Halloween mix was not complete until: Ivan Hrvatska - Making Love to Halloween Night [via PanModal]

Bobby "Boris" Pickett's original "Monster Mash" and three other cuts from the record

Old Time Radio, longtime Oddio favorite, hosts Arch Oboler's Plays and many other old radio horror programs [Arch Oboler's Plays recommended by Mr. Boh of Baltimore]

Silence! Silence of the Lambs, the musical, with such titles as "Put the F**king Lotion in the Basket" and " In the Dark with a Maniac," seems spot on for Halloween terror.

Halloween Stomp features 27 tracks of jazz and big band dance music for a haunted house party. Provided by Wonderful Wonderblog.

Bride of Monster Mashup, wherein ghouls mix up Halloween classics, spooky strangeness and scary throat grabbers, is a available for download as separate tracks or as a full 80 minute mix.

Bonus CD is also available with the Bride of Monster Mashup

Scribblemonster and His Pals - A Monster Goes Rrraargh! is a fun song from FreeKidsMusic.com

Scar Stuff is THE place for Halloween recordings

Happy Halloween!

Ghouls with Attitude

Spooky spooky!
Otis Fodder has done it again! He has prepared a spooktacular Halloween mix of the rare and haunting to put a fright into your holiday. Retrolicious has devilishly provided hosting. The cover art for the 2-CD collection is the bewitching work of Suzanne Baumann, creator of Fridge Magnet Concoctions and head honcho for the art departments of both The 365 Days Project and Comfort Stand Recordings. The web work was left to Oddio Overplay to prepare a ghoulish delight. Visit soon to see what other fiends were involved in this endeavor, as the whole frightful affair turns into a pumpkin after October 31st. Happy Halloween and Happy Listening!

[Internet Explorer recommended for capturing the ghouls]
