RIP MRR

In January, Maximum Rocknroll announced they were calling it quits on the  legendary punk magazine. That is heartbreaking news to the worldwide punk community. Once upon a time before BBS and the Internet, MRR was a lifeline to even the most remote of punk scenes, uniting, inciting, informing, inspiring.

http://maximumrocknroll.com

The good news is that MRR will still maintain the archive, likely the largest and most diverse punk audio library on Earth, and the radio show which is still in syndication since Tim's day in the late 1970s and also available as a podcast (subscribe).

More good news is that the Internet Archive hosts a nice collection of about 300 issues of the famous zine—scanned and searchable!

Go now and you can still get the final issues and back issues from Maximum Rocknroll's store to have, hold, and cherish. I have years of my MRRs and still adore and enjoy them. Cheers to all my MRR friends. MRR is dead, long live MRR.

gPodder Is a Life Changer

gPodder downloads and manages free audio and video content, also known as podcasts, on any subject you can imagine. When subject experts share their years of acquired knowledge in a book or an interview, you gain some of that hard-earned knowledge in only the time it takes to read, watch, or listen. That can be a real life changer!

Using gPodder, you can find, download, and then listen or watch directly on your computer or on your mobile devices. gPodder supports RSS, Atom, YouTube, Soundcloud, Vimeo, and XSPF feeds. gPodder can also import your existing subscriptions from iTunes or from an OPML file.

gPodder is available for Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, Mac OS X and mobile devices, like the Nokia N810, N900 and N9.

The Oddio Team have used gPodder for six years, and have only the best reviews.
  • We love how it can be set to automatically download new audio books, radio shows, and lectures. Then after we have listened to them, gPodder can mark them as old or delete them.
  • We love the episode details window that gives synopses of audio and video content.
  • We love how gPodder lets us set up custom file names, like Name of Show - Episode Number - Title - Broadcast Date. This makes browsing files on devices much more convenient.
  • We love that we can stream shows we are not sure about to preview them before downloading.
  • We love how gPodder syncs up with mobile devices, replacing old content with new content. We always have fresh content!

We just love gPodder! It is free, open source, and works in most operating systems, so give it a go and feed your brain!

Download gPodder for Various Devices and Operating Systems

Next week, the Oddbots will share some of the audiobooks and podcasts they enjoy.

The Misunderstood Wolf Suffers Again

Despite the rush of exciting fear from folktales, there is NOT ONE single case of wolves ever attacking and killing man on the North American continent. They may kill livestock man has introduced to the wolves native home, but has never killed man. (LISTEN or download mp3)

Get more info on the misunderstood wolf. While you are there, how about joining Robert Redford in taking action?

Robert Redford has long championed the cause of the wolf. Hear him [zip file] on the first side of this record narrating "The Wolf You Never Knew" for the American Museum of Natural History in 1971 [320 kb/s, 32 Mb].

You can also click to hear the recording in lower quality [3.5 Mb].

More bad news for the wolf. Last week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State of Wyoming announced that they had reached an agreement over Wyoming’s long-disputed wolf management plan. It has failed to commit to maintaining at least 15 breeding pairs of wolves in Wyoming, and it has designated wolves as predators that can be killed without a license in about 90% of the state.

Please take a moment to help save the wolves throughout America. Together we might convince the administration to stop the slaughter of wolves and return our small wolf population to the status of Endangered Species. Thank you.

Audio Letters from the Remote Operator

The Remote Operator (of Shirley and Spinoza Radio, The Royal Oculus and Gramophone Company, and other mindblowers) has sent audio letters from eastern China where he has been operating for a few years. Originally returning to his location in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China in 2006, he has since moved east into China proper. His letters/ broadcasts reflect the "East Side" relocation.

As ever, his letter home broadcasts are true audio field trips. Put yourself on location, escape, let the audio take you there. Enjoy!

Highly recommended.

Canada's Finest Metal

Special Edition: Full Metal Podcast
From Lisa Christiansen at CBC Radio 3:

We play a lot of great music here at Radio 3, and for one radio station we do play an unbelievable number of different genres, from hip hop to folk; electronica to pop and hard rock. But there is one genre that is sadly under-represented - metal.

But not anymore. Today marks the first Full Metal Podcast for CBC Radio 3. And I couldn't be more um, filled with unholy joy.

For the past few months a crack team of producers and one eager host, have listened to hours of metal tunes from our collection here at New Music Canada. We then sought out the opinions of a few serious metal heads and created this podcast.

You'll hear music from Protest the Hero, Cursed, Bison, and Cryptopsy. I check in with a touring Cam Pipes of 3 Inches of Blood and ponder the why behind Montreal's metal capital of North America status with legendary drummer Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy. [I had the pleasure of meeting Cam last year. Seems like a great guy. -katya]

It's a cross-country journey through some of the hardest and loudest music being made in Canada today, and it's all in one easy to enjoy package. So kick back and get ready and watch where you bang that head. Neck injuries are not covered by Radio 3.

Download the podcast in one of the 3 formats:M4A | MP3 | OGG

Featured Bands: Protest the Hero, Penetrator, Forty Birds, Gross Misconduct, Cursed, Divinity, Cryptopsy, Rammer, Bison, Soulscar, Arapacis, Sequoia, 3 Inches of Blood and Derelict.

You can find more info here.

Buskers

Busker Dial Up (Du) is a recording service for subway and street buskers (street performers). The service allows for buskers and spectators to call up and have the performance recorded. Busker Du will record 3 minutes of audio and hang-up the phone automatically. The audio recorded is then sent to the blog, which is also available as a Podcast as the sounds of the city from the street and underground that people recognize on their commute.

Audio recorded will be posted to the audio-blog and made available to all who cherish lo-fi original music. Try it out at your favorite subway station or street corner. 1 (646) 862-7829

Some of these recordings are enjoyable, and some are impressive.

CarsCast

Was laughing with Mr. Write last night about CarsCasts, and thought I really ought to tell oddiophiles about them. Schoolgirls pretending to interview the Cars in 1982 - we love it! Hope you get some giggles out it, too.
