CosmoSoul Delivers Soul from Spain

Sunrise was the debut album of CosmoSoul with all the lyrics written and sung by Alana Sinkëy, whose sweet soul voice is sure to bring you a smile. In fact, when there are multiple layers of Alana's voice, such as in the song "Sunny Days," it is hard not to smile.

A truly international act, the five members of CosmoSoul come from three continents and five different continents.

The album was originally hosted on Jamendo and has since been reissued on Bandcamp. You can still get either version, and if you get it at Bandcamp, you can support band with a purchase.

Gordon and Stravinsky Multimedia

In this recording, the La Jolla Symphony under the direction of conductor Steven Schick performs two very different works in one multimedia program.

The first is Gotham, a contemporary work by composer Michael Gordon and its film by Bill Morrison. The second is composer Igor Stravinsky's work with André Gide's text, Persephone.

Gordon + Stravinsky - La Jolla Symphony
from University of California Television
Premiere Date: May 2016; 82 minutes

Orchestra: La Jolla Symphony
Conductor: Steven Schick

1. Gotham
Composer: Michael Gordon
Filmmaker: Bill Morrison

The first half offers GOTHAM, a 2004 joint production by filmmaker Bill Morrison and composer Michael Gordon. Using archival footage of New York City, Gotham combines film, projectors, lighting, and the orchestra to create a haunting impression of the city.

2. Persephone
Composer: Igor Stravinsky
Narrator: Alice Teyssier
Tenor: John K. Russell
Chorus: North Coast Singers Caprice Choir

Stravinsky’s opulent PERSEPHONE, which the composer described as a "melodrama," sets a text by André Gide that tells of the descent of the goddess Persephone into the underworld and her return. For this presentation the Symphony is joined by the Lux Boreal Dance Company, a narrator, a tenor soloist, and a children’s choir.

Video of the performances, including the film and the dance troupe are available to stream or download at UCTV (University of California Television) and on their YouTube profile. The film is also available for viewing in three pieces at the official website of filmmaker Bill Morrison.

Nina Hagen Live At DNA Lounge

Nina Hagen is many things — The Mother of Punk, model, actress, singer, songwriter, all-around performer, to name a few. She is also a hero to countless punks of at least two generations.

This live show from the The DNA Lounge Live Collection was recorded at the club in San Francisco, California, 9 February 2005. Nina performs songs reaching all the way back into her catalog to the 1970s, as well as two songs from her then current album, Big Band Explosion, and some uniquely Nina cover renditions.

Funk Diva Saidah Baba Talibah

Canadian chanteuse Saidah Baba Talibah is bringing the funk sound today, as powerfully as diva Betty Davis did in her day. Saidah's album (S)Cream is funky, sticky, rocking, and waiting for you.

Press release: Satisfying and soulful. Raw and raunchy. Inspiring, tantalizing and scandalous. Dripping with sensuality. Saidah Baba Talibah will take you on a trip, get you high, bring you to your knees and take you to that place called grace, all in one album. Known as an electrifying performer, Saidah Baba Talibah has a powerful voice, which goes from a seductive, soft purr to a powerful bellow at the turn of a dime.

Now Magazine (Canada's largest weekly): "There’s Rock n' Roll. And then there’s the Rock n' Soul of buzzy Toronto-bred vocalist Saidah Baba Talibah, daughter of Tony and Grammy Award-nominated icon Salome Bey, 'Canada's First Lady of Blues'. Strong bloodline notwithstanding, Saidah is a fierce artist that isn't afraid to combine rock/funk/soul in all of her performances!"

RhymeSquare Comps

Being fans of Ill Papa Giraffe [Facebook], we were happy to find them on the new sampler from UK independent clothing label RhymeSquare, RhymeSquare: Volume Three, Late Spring. Check all three volumes.

Typical modern hip hop sadly reflects ignorance, negativity, misogyny, and violence. In some shining scenes, however, you find intelligence, positivity, equality, and community -- all vital to early hip hop. This is one of those shining scenes. Hear their messages. Most of the artists on this RhymeSquare compilation are artists to support and celebrate. That says something good about the good people at RhymeSquare, too.

Go on and get yourself some fun music, fun threads, and a cool little bear at RhymeSquare!

Get Your Dark Industrial Fix with Deuxvolt

After playing for years in various industrial, dark and goth projects, Olympia, Shade, and Just combined their powers to create something new, Deuxvolt, uniting gothic, techno, dance, industrial, and classical. Pounding beats drive industrial layers of sound, synthethizersclassical instruments, such as piano, violin, and harpsichord, and a variety of vocal styles, including classical voice.

Last February, the band released the album Union of Opposites following a modern model of promotion: the Social Pay model. They ask downloaders to support Deuxvolt through social networks (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.) or in any other way of spreading the word and promoting the album.

In October, the Art Director JustDeux launched his electronic album The Dance Machine with the same Social Pays stipulation. This release was hand-in-hand with his Worldwide Industrial Dance Contest in cooperation with DasKlub, the largest Industrial Dance Kommunity. The best dancers were awarded earlier this year.

Some time back, Deuxvolt also released a horror mix that is sure to get the ghouls at your next Halloween party on the dance floor.

New Life for Classic Polish Grooves

For several years, producer and mixmaster 77cuts has presented a sample heavy critically acclaimed "Polish jazz / retro / lounge mixtape series" called Fonoteka (Tape Library) as Estrada Nagrania (Recording Stage) under the auspices of Krajowa Agencja Wydawnicza (National Publishing Agency).

From a fabulous tape catalog of Polish recordings and library music 77cuts  creates seamless releases of jazzy lounge, downtempo, soul, dance, space age pop, now sound, and hip hop beats. (Especially check out Printempo for hip hop beat. Many familiar samples there, such as Roger "Wildchild" McKenzie).

Here's a Google translation of the process:
... Ministry of Culture and Art in Warsaw central switch on the phone standing in a small room next to the minister. Switched to another phone number of the office is the head of the department. Behind the wall of this small room has its head office capital Estrada. Using the same phone line, its employees interact with all the musicians in the country. Created new recordings, records, stage performances - recorded hundreds of tapes. As usual in the history of popular music at the end of the decade began to emerge in a new style.... Developed so naturally and so - in principle - "quietly" that the general public does not realize this, it is at the threshold of a new era of style. But there are already hundreds of recorded tapes.
And from those tapes come 77cuts' new sounds. Several of the Fonoteka recordings as Estrada Nagrania and subsequent remixes are available for free download in '60s stylized blog and for purchase at Bandcamp.

However, the remixes, such as the newest volume, Fonoteka 7: Remixed, include Western samples. This detracts from the unique quality of the original mixes of studio tapes from Poland. This sentiment is echoed in something 77cuts once wrote (another Google translation):

Many critics believe that some musicians use today, for example, elements of Indian music and the blues, do not really know about Indian music and blues. Those critics are right - Recordings Estrada knows only Polish music. Thus was created the music for a period of time in Poland, the peace, the lack of stability. I barely hear it, but still the game will play loud and long.
That knowledge is exactly what makes the original Fonotekas so special.
