Kowloon Walled City to Rock Your Teeth Out

The Kowloon Walled City sound is a conglomerate of bottom-heavy sludge, hardcore, and metal set to rock the teeth out of your skull.

Their name alone calls to mind one of the most anarchic, innovative, and disturbing human experiments of all time which can set your brain on edge before you even hear the band. Then you hear the band, and they pound through your chest.

Bad ass.

Prog Rock Tribute to Mike Portnoy

American drummer Mike Portnoy is best known as the former drummer, backing vocalist, and a co-founder of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. He is well-respected and highly influential in progressive circles for his technique and decades of performance.

Independent musicians, graphic artists, and a computer graphics demogroup collaborated on a grand scale multimedia tribute to Portnoy titled Honor Thy Drummer. It is available for free download from SpaceProg.com.

Stereo Killer

Time to send some love to StereoKiller.com. That site hosts years of hardcore punk, metal, emo, and hard rock albums and tracks for free download. There are even some releases classified in other genres, such as country, hip hop, and indie.

StereoKiller began in 1997 as a forum for Pennsylvania hardcore, and the community grew to the massive site it is today with something like a quarter million users.

StereoKiller is a great spot to:

Guitarified

PetrucciFever, aka Julian Puttins, released a 15-track album, Guitarified, featuring his fantastic metal guitar work with a BOSS BR-864 and an Ibanez JEM 7DBK. PetrucciFever also shares his tabs and back tracks.

The songs were originally available as performance videos on YouTube. You can still see them there today, as well as his newer works and collaborations.

Open Metalcast

Open Metalcast! Hey headbangers, I apologize for not promoting the solid Open Metalcast to you earlier. Craig Maloney has been delivering top-notch Creative Commons licensed metal in podcast form since the summer of 2010. His Instrumetalcasts, instrumental metal, are favorites at Rancho Oddio. Rawk!

Craig links on his site to every band and tune he promotes on the podcast. He also has a community for the podcast at Google+. All the shows (99 at this posting) are archived at the Internet Archive.

Here's a sample show, an Instrumetalcast, just to demonstrate the diversity and the format.

Laid down a lot of pop and electronic selections this week. Seems only right to kick off the weekend with some rock!

Ringing in the New Year

Happy New Year, music friends!

As of January 1, 2011, Oddio Overplay has made 1,452 contributions to the Free Music Archive. That is the number to beat for activity in 2011. How about fulfilling a resolution right now to be a part of that most excellent free music community? As the byline reads, "It's not just free music; it's good music!"

Later this month, Oddio's netlabel for children, Kazoomzoom will relaunch with a new look and a larger catalog. This is a very exciting time for us, as I have wanted to really kickstart that slowly developing project. I'm full of enthusiasm, hope, and big plans for 2011. I hope you and your family will be a part of an exciting new year at Kazoomzoom!

After repeatedly playing FMA favorites in an attempt to list the top 10 tracks among those added to the archive this year, it was clear that there is just too much music worth celebrating at the FMA. The task soon morphed into praising the best five to ten selections for many genres in 12 mixes.

Disco Pirata

This is a free "pirate disc" sampler from Barcelona Sonora, a group of professionals in the arts in Spain. They are graphic designers, photographers, web developers, promoters, and t-shirt designers who promote the Creative Commons "paradigm shift" parallel to their commercial work. The complete "gold box set" of the entire pirate disc series (110 tracks) is available through P2P thanks to Barcelona Sonora. Loved Like a Milkshake, Wesley Willis Tribute

Wesley Willis (1963-2003) was an artist and musician from Chicago who released hundreds of songs with his own unique sense of humor. His chronic schizophrenia was reflected in his work which leaned toward the bizarre and obscene. Willis gained a cult following and major label attention.

One of his labels, the prominent independent Alternative Tentacles described Wesley's work as "simultaneously disturbing, hilarious, blunt, and intoxicating. Wesley's sheer excitement and unaffected honesty about every cultural phenomenon, defined his music as truly individual, and truly punk rock."

Sadly, in 2002 Wesley was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). He underwent emergency surgery in June 2003, and passed away in August of the same year.

Hiji, a.k.a. M-Halo, soon thereafter organized a tribute album to honor Wesley Willis. Work for LOVED LIKE A MILKSHAKE: A WESLEY WILLIS TRIBUTE ALBUM began when Hiji posted a Craigslist listing suggesting a tribute of cover songs. The response was positive and the following 18 songs were selected. The final product was released for free online in November 2003 and produced by M-Halo with mastering and additional production by Tom Gordon.

We play a lot of great music here at Radio 3, and for one radio station we do play an unbelievable number of different genres, from hip hop to folk; electronica to pop and hard rock. But there is one genre that is sadly under-represented - metal.

But not anymore. Today marks the first Full Metal Podcast for CBC Radio 3. And I couldn't be more um, filled with unholy joy.

For the past few months a crack team of producers and one eager host, have listened to hours of metal tunes from our collection here at New Music Canada. We then sought out the opinions of a few serious metal heads and created this podcast.

You'll hear music from Protest the Hero, Cursed, Bison, and Cryptopsy. I check in with a touring Cam Pipes of 3 Inches of Blood and ponder the why behind Montreal's metal capital of North America status with legendary drummer Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy. [I had the pleasure of meeting Cam last year. Seems like a great guy. -katya]

It's a cross-country journey through some of the hardest and loudest music being made in Canada today, and it's all in one easy to enjoy package. So kick back and get ready and watch where you bang that head. Neck injuries are not covered by Radio 3.
