Audio Letters from the Remote Operator

The Remote Operator (of Shirley and Spinoza Radio, The Royal Oculus and Gramophone Company, and other mindblowers) has sent audio letters from eastern China where he has been operating for a few years. Originally returning to his location in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China in 2006, he has since moved east into China proper. His letters/ broadcasts reflect the "East Side" relocation.

As ever, his letter home broadcasts are true audio field trips. Put yourself on location, escape, let the audio take you there. Enjoy!

Highly recommended.

Shirley and Spinoza Update

"It's confirmed! The s&S radio stream has at last found a new digital home (no, that's single space, rack mounted penthouse in the tallest skyscraper in the UK) from which to dispense these sounds to the world once again. Our preliminary tests went without a hitch, but now begins the next phase of moving the sonic merchandise across the Atlantic and getting everything in place before hitting the big sSwitch.

"Thanks to everyone who has pitched in for the cause! The donations will continue to go toward upkeep, site fees, a bowl of noodles every now and then, etc. The biggest thank you unequivocally goes to The Wolf, who has ultimately made this possible." -- Shirley and Spinoza

Meanwhile, the site, the vast program archive and the Royal Oculus and Gramophone Company subsite are also getting a rebuild. Yes, listeners, things are coming along swimmingly! Our most humble thanks to The Wolf and to those who donated.

New (Old) Shirley and Spinoza Offerings

Apologies for having disappeared dear listeners. The 24/7 stream is still currently silent while we search for a new home. As a reward for checking in here however - how about a few collections of vintage s&S ?
enjoy!

NEW ADDITIONS (Oct. 2007):
  • s&S Episode 23 (from 1993) - from the deep dark corners of the s&S audio cupboards…a 30 minute compilation of quickie segments from our days in a college closed circuit radio closet - put together in the spring o’ ‘93!
  • s&S Episode 24 (from 1994-5) - another half hour compilation of chaotic moments at FRB
Filed under:Semi-Bi-Quarterly, extras!, vintage s&S — s&S

Shirley and Spinoza Radio Outage

Shirley and Spinoza Radio is a member of the Oddio Overplay blogging team. This month the radio server was lost. Being currently located in Xinjiang does not help matters. If you know of a server for this worthwhile radio station, please get in touch.

Shirley & Spinoza Radio

Dear Listeners,

Due to suddenly finding our radio stream homeless and in a bit of a scramble to change hosts, set up a new stream server, hem our solar-wind sails and blow the space debris from our compound-eyes, s&S Radio is currently OFF THE AIR until further notice.

We will hopefully have this remedied soon!!

In the meantime, please visit the s&S ARCHIVE.

Thanks

Now Playing from the s&S ARCHIVE:

ROGC: “Under a Dim Crescent Moon” - part 2
live-mixed webcast of field recordings
running time: 2 hours
Playlist and Info Page Here
part 2 of a 2-show series (part 1 is located Here)
For most of 2003, I lived in the northwestern-most region of China officially known as:Xinjiang : Uyghur Autonomous Region and sometimes referred to by some as China’s “other, lesser known Tibet” for situational parallels.
I’d recieved a generous grant to document the folk music (as opposed to the classical muqam music) of the Turkic muslim cultures traditionally native to the region… focusing mainly on the largest group: the Uyghurs , but also including examples of Kazakh and Kyrgyz songs.
For this show, I live-mixed many of those field recordings, which while mostly consist of music, also include ambiences, pop & traditional music on cassettes & cd’s I picked up…and recordings of shortwave radio.
The field recorded music you hear was, with only a few exceptions, strictly performed by common folk (farmers, carpenters, (incl. mystics and beggars)) demonstrating something that’s very much a cultural part of everyday life. With east China’s ever accellerating blitzkrieg development of it’s west though, these cultural traditions are going up in smoke fast.
The recordings were done with head-worn binaural microphones - in yurts, homes, under grape trellises, in mud brick courtyards, orchards and in the streets of oasis towns in areas surrounding the expansive Taklamakan desert
Several of these recordings - in purer, more carefully curated form - will be released later this year on the fantastic Sublime Frequencies label. (!!!)

Chenard Walcker Tribute and Love Letters

Marco of WM Recordings and Weirdomusic.com has passed along the news from Roy "Chicky" Arad that Chenard Walcker, a friend of the online music world, is slowly recovering from a diabetic coma. His brother reports that he is not physically suffering.

Chenard is the prolific visual and musical collage artist who operates the Free Sample Zone with 58 releases available for download (including one for Oddio Overplay.) So many of us have benefited from Chenard's work. This is our chance to repay our sweet friend and to send him our love.

"Chenard Walcker is the self-proclaimed Pope of samplecore, or, to put it simply, of musical cut-n-paste. Within a few years, he became a legend in the netlabel scene thanks to his prolific and virtuoso collages." -- official site

The last time I heard Chenard speak was last year for a get-well-soon radio show put together by Oddio Overplay and Shirley and Spinoza Radio for Otis Fodder.

Let's put together something of love and thanks for Chenard. Roy Chicky Arad [bio] has suggested a tribute album, and WM Recordings is organizing now to host it. It might also be simultaneous hosted elsewhere on the web.

So start making your songs, coloring your greeting cards and making your collages for Chenard now!

All responses should be directed to Marco.

More Halloween Audio

:: September post of Halloween audio

:: JohnRozum.com and Senses Working Overtime are both running Halloween treats for every day of October!

:: brainsaw - Music for the Paranoid Schizophrenic is a dark, industrial record with serious leanings toward Halloween. Despite the titles relating to Cold War Soviet times, such as "Stalin's Will," "Proletariat," "Gulag (Welcome to Hell)", "Patriots Make Great Cannon Fodder" and "Death to the Enemies of the People," this could very easily be added to your Halloween mix

:: Pieces of Flair hosting their Zombie Song Off, wherein contributors submit thier own zombie tunes! [I'm a sucker for strings, so leaning towards the lxox track. Oh but the metal, and the live one, and the faux '80s. Glad I get to love them all and not choose just one.]

:: NEW! Royal Oakland Gramophone Company presents "Hallowe’eny E’en"
a 3.5 hour Halloween special
Filed under: collage, noise, electronic, improvisation, live-mix, experimental, spoken, holiday theme

:: NEW! Yewknee.com's mixes Songs For Spooks and Pure Terror

:: Paul's Rambling's has posted this year's Halloween lounge mix, Music to Watch Ghouls By. Beware of the pumpkin martini!

AND, my Halloween mix was not complete until: Ivan Hrvatska - Making Love to Halloween Night [via PanModal]

Bobby "Boris" Pickett's original "Monster Mash" and three other cuts from the record

Old Time Radio, longtime Oddio favorite, hosts Arch Oboler's Plays and many other old radio horror programs [Arch Oboler's Plays recommended by Mr. Boh of Baltimore]

Silence! Silence of the Lambs, the musical, with such titles as "Put the F**king Lotion in the Basket" and " In the Dark with a Maniac," seems spot on for Halloween terror.

Halloween Stomp features 27 tracks of jazz and big band dance music for a haunted house party. Provided by Wonderful Wonderblog.

Bride of Monster Mashup, wherein ghouls mix up Halloween classics, spooky strangeness and scary throat grabbers, is a available for download as separate tracks or as a full 80 minute mix.

Bonus CD is also available with the Bride of Monster Mashup

Scribblemonster and His Pals - A Monster Goes Rrraargh! is a fun song from FreeKidsMusic.com

Scar Stuff is THE place for Halloween recordings

Happy Halloween!

Calling All Fiends

CALLING ALL FIENDS, a collection of frightening, damaging and disturbing music conjured up for Halloween, is now available at OddioOverplay.com.

Halloween is meant to be scary, right? Year after year we dust off the old, silly, novelty records. While they are fun, they not at all frightening. Oddio Overplay put the challenge to musical artists the world over to create Halloween music that is "frightening, damaging and disturbing." No "Monster Mash," instead creepy soundtracks to a fiendish Halloween. They succeeded with CALLING ALL FIENDS, two hours of original music! Some of these pieces will creep you right out of your skin.

featuring:  8m2stereo, [Not] Daniel Johnston (with Daniel Johnston), Brian and Harlan, Bureaucratica, Caühaüs, Click Click Click, Grant, Jeffrey Letterly, Lee Rosevere, Lenkei, Limonadiac, Mark Harvey, Mr. Fab and His Bag of Heads, Nigel Simmons, Pharmacom, Rain Station, Roymond, Shirley and Spinoza, Splogman, Stealing Orchestra, Sublinear, The DVDs, The Threshold People, The Waiters, Ton Rückert, Urban Inbreed, Weirdomusic, X-Tokyo-River-God

In 2010, this album was added to the Free Music Archive, so you can download with one click or embed a player like this.

Mix Market

Tired of the same songs in your player? Commercials keeping you from turning on the radio? Interested in hearing something new?

Thought just maybe, so here a few favorite sites for downloading mixes handmade by cut-and-paste geniuses. Thinking about the time invested in these - sometimes weekly - blows the mind. Some DJs never sleep.

UPDATE: Reader Yo Daddy reminds everyone about the psychedelic mixes at CAST EXOTIC, especially their Otic Radio shows - "a stream of sonic ideas and modern music culling from over the past 50 years... psychedelic, avant-garde, experimental, punk, noise, psychUnderground, etc." Thanks, Yo Daddy!

:: Basstar.de 30 Minuten Megatapes
via De:Bug Pod: "For a while the Basstar.de Crew is running a mixtape website.

"The idea is to present 30 minutes mixes (half a tape), the shortest DJ discipline, with the maximum of content. DJing as an artform; it’s not about playing 12 tracks in 60 min. Still these mixes are no boring scratch routine showcases, you rather hear big stacks of vinyl formed into an individual piece of art (sweat, very long nights and complaining neighbours included).

"I dont want to bore you to death, just like to mention no computer bullshit was used for editing or so. and no genre boundaries."
style: breakbeat

:: Audio Kitchen with The Professor
via WFMU: "The Professor serves up an hour of homemade recordings freshly liberated from thrift stores and junk shops, as well as some amateur audio spirited away from the closets and computers of their creators. We will podcast reruns from the Audio Kitchen archives."
style: thematic nostalgia

:: LIVE: on Shirley & Spinoza
"Live streams beamed directly from the catacombs of Oakland." [Seriously, I love this one.]
style: experimental

:: Ken's Last Ever Radio Extravaganza
"Live improvised sound experiment, collaged while you listen. New show audio added to podcast approximately bi-weekly."
style: experimental

:: Ebony Cuts
[Great for shaking that booty.]
style: 1972-85 disco

:: James Lauer's Chicago Underground Sessions
"Tech-House, Tribal & Progressive beats in motion. Hosted by James Lauer, Chicago Underground Sessions is a monthly exclusive mix for Proton Radio that features the top underground house DJ's and most forward thinking producers. The show focuses on featuring both well-established international artists as well as notable guest DJ's from Chicago, the Midwest and beyond."
style: electronica genres

:: Radiophon'ic 2003
"Built in the heart of the city [Brussels], the Brigittine Chapel draws us into ourselves through its spirit. A space for listening and performing, agora for exchange and debate. The radio in all its uproar and explosion.

"From wave broadcasting to web streaming, the invisible part of this RADIOPHON’iC island is a transitory and short-lived experimental radio, whose heart [did] beat for a week to the rythme of sounds, words, voices, encounters and creations.

"To retrieve the sounds of the lost radio through the presence and work of contemporary artists : the lame but spontaneous experiments of the forerunners, the hidden ideologies of the war partisans, the social and friendly sounds of the pre-TV years, and the destabillising and anxious sensation created by Orson Welles. Invent together tomorrow’s radiophonic use.
A human experiment."
style: varied styles of the DJs, experimental

:: Basic Hip Digital Oddio [of all places]
The mixtape project ended after the sixth week, but you can still enjoy the Great American Music Machine and Space Age Pop Music program streams.
style: space age pop, lounge

Free Trip to San Francisco Bay

UB Radio and Shirley & Spinoza have been having fun putting together live programs the first Sunday of each month. There is plenty of photographic evidence of this excitement. The audio evidence is archived, as well. The two combined equal a free trip to the San Fran Bay for evenings of sound joy surrounded by artists.

December's show featured string instruments. Me, I'm a nut for experimental strings, so this is one of my favorite UB Radio shows. November's show featured water, another great sound source. You should see those pics of their lab apparati. My dream lab concept is revised.
