Discount Hi-Fi, Friends Making Music

Discount Hi-Fi is or was a business in the Porter District of Gainesville, Florida, USA.
Discount Hi-Fi is also the name of a band in the same town. Discount Hi-Fi is an album by the Melodicans, also of Gainesville, and made up of some of the same friends as the band Discount Hi-Fi. It is also the name of an album by fellow Florida band Honey Chamber.

The Letter by Discount Hi-Fi is an album of melodic pop rock. This is the fun album that had the Oddio Team digging for more information.

Meanwhile, Discount Hi-Fi by the Melodicans is an album of reggae tinted pop songs.

Cheers to all the musician friends who make this music together.

Eisley Preview Album

Later this month, Eisley will release their Currents album. While awaiting the May 28th launch date, listeners can enjoy their Currents and More Sampler, a featured free NoiseTrade release. The Currents launch is the start of the Eisley summer tour.

"Eisley’s fourth album, Currents, is a study in contrasts. It’s the sound of a band growing up, but not forgetting the magical power of childlike curiosity or the joy of unselfconscious creativity. It’s an album that nods to playful pop and stormy rock, but also gentle electronica and delicate classical. But more than that, Currents finds the group forging their own path in the world, but never losing sight of the homegrown heart that’s made the band beloved by legions of fans."

Indie Pop from The Wind Whistles

"Tom and Liza are the Wind Whistles and they live together in the suburbs of Vancouver, Canada. As an indie folk duo, they both sing and both play acoustic instruments (guitar, bass). Sometimes they play alone and sometimes they bring friends, more times not.

"They think they sound like a cross of Lemonheads and Violent Femmes while people tell them they sound like a cross of the Decemberists and the Moldy Peaches. Beginning in the spring of 2006, they've done the usual artist thing: demo, radio, festivals, tours, friends and lots and lots of shows. In 2007, they have released their first full length window sills and try to spread it around as much as they can. Thats why they have decided to re-release their 12-track LP under a creative commons license."

Kevin Seconds Solo

7 Seconds was formed in the 1980s and remains among the longest lived of any group from the first wave of California hardcore punk with legendary records, like Crew and Walk Together, Rock Together.

Frontman Kevin Seconds continues to perform and record with 7 Seconds and has branched out into other avenues with his solo work. His release Don't Let Me Lose Ya is far from hardcore. The album is singer-songwriter relaxed rock and American folk "with the vitality of someone who is content to follow his muse," to quote Quote Unquote Records.

The album's label, Asian Man Records, describes it this way:

"Kevin Seconds' new album makes apparent what longtime fans already know: Kevin Seconds is a pop troubadour with a protest singer's heart, writing catchy, impeccably well-crafted tunes. "

Don't Let Me Lose Ya is available for free download with a suggested donation of $5. You can also purchase the album in LP, CD, and cassette formats at Asian Man Records.

Joshua Worden's Downtempo Soul

Joshua Worden is a downtempo soul singer, musician, and producer whose music flows smoothly across genres like soul, rhythm and blues, singer-songwriter pop, and even jazz. He creates a calm comfort with his music and an immediate friendly intimacy with his words.

He is sharing his songs "The Line (featuring blctxt)" and "Salted Graces." Once you fall in love with those tracks, his entire releases A Pause in the Desert and The Withered Tree are available from Amazon, iTunes, and Bandcamp.

Joshua performs with Will Montgomery at venues in the Southeast US, so get out there to see the magic.

"... displaying an electronic edge with R&B/soul flavor. It's as stirring as his past work, and is produced and executed equally as well - Worden doesn't do things halfway - but is far from more of the same. His efforts are worth your attention." --Florida Times Union

"... flows remarkably well. It's stylish and mellow, supplementing its otherwise simple melodies with layers of electronic tunes and ambience." --EU Magazine

"Joshua Worden delivers an air of road worn smoothness to an otherwise new sound." --Doughnut Magazine

Yop Pop

Yop is a singer/songwriter from Rotterdam. Like some sort of home-made Brian Wilson variety he layers his songs, while at the same time stealing some tricks from the likes of Robert Pollard, Grandaddy, Kristin Hersh, Frank Black and Ray Davies.
This free download is an esc.rec. re-release of the 2006 original that was self-released by Yop, but holds a previously unreleased bonus track to top the cake. -- esc.rec press release

Recent Song Fights

Here are some of the most recent Song Fight battles: I Blame You Entirely, French Toast, and A Map for Your Wall. More in the archives. Maybe you will accept the challenge for February?

"Song Fight is a free Web site where Internet musicians enter their work into competition. Every ten days or so, one or more titles are posted, the competitors write a brand new song inspired by one of these titles, and the Internet at large is invited to vote for their favorite song for each title.

"Our goal is to provide a venue for new music and creative expression on the Internet."-- Song Fight

A Victim of Good Times

Song Fighter "Father Bingo" is a member of the band A Victim of Good Times. This past summer the group released The Summer EP.

Song Fight recommends the release for "fans of 90s college radio and regrettable good times." This agrees with the website for A Victim of Good Times.

A Victim of Good Times was formed under the influence of college radio staples: Pixies, Weezer, Pavement, Nirvana, Modest Mouse, Pinback, The Misfits. With their dreamy, Morrissey-esque vocals over urgent instrumentation, the result is catchy, pensive, and may cause a blinding hangover that leads you to call out of work the next morning.

Fronted by Matt Gaines (November Radio) and featuring bassist Mike Lebovitz (Father Bingo), guitarist Clayton Thomas (Bad Press, Svingali), and drummer Dan Sagherian (Brody, Overlord), AVOGT released a five-song EP, “The Summer EP,” in the summer of 2012. They are currently working on their next release with producer Will Yip at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA.

Paper Lions

Paper Lions is a Canadian indie rock band, formed in Belfast, Prince Edward Island in 2004 by singer and guitarist John MacPhee, drummer David Cyrus MacDonald, guitarist Colin Buchanan and bass guitarist Rob MacPhee. John and Rob are brothers, and Buchanan grew up next door to them. They won the 2006 East Coast Music Award for Pop Recording of the Year for their EP 6-pack.

The band offers you their Trophies album in exchange for an email address. Secret: the album comes with a bonus track!

exclaim.ca said of Trophies:

Trophies can be seen as a new beginning as much as a honing of Paper Lions' considerable talent. Either way, its six songs are all loud and fun indie rock teeming with great riffs and sing-along choruses. "Lost the War," which has already made its way onto MuchMusic and Aux rotation, is the clear standout, but the rest of the EP measures up quite well. "Sweat it Out" is a herky-jerk, mid-tempo rocker with off-kilter drums that emphasize the chaos. But John and Rob MacPhee are able to ground the track with a great melody, a trick that's prevalent in all the band's work. The East Coast pumps out rock bands of such a high calibre, relative to its population, that it takes a lot to stand out from the pack. Somehow, Paper Lions are able to carve out their niche without abandoning the elements of the genre that drew us to them in the first place. Yes, you've heard this all before, but it's hard to argue when it's done this well.

Recently from the band, 05 March 2013:

We are the champions, my friend(s)! And do you know why? Because of all you lovely people.

As many of you are probably aware, we were engaged in a dispute with a former record label over our album Trophies, and the fact that the label still owned the record despite never paying us for the units sold. Well, we're happy to tell you that today, Trophies is back the hands of her rightful owners: us. Yes, thanks to the glorious stink you guys made on Reddit and all over the internet, the rights to our record were returned to us. It's up on iTunes right now, and every sale henceforth will go directly to us!

Jane Siberry Shares Discography

Inimitable, complex, idiosyncratic, chanteuse Jane Siberry has chosen to make her discography available for free. Jane is offering 16 complete releases with booklets in both mp3 and aiff formats. Hopefully she will get a donation system going soon, because this is quite a large gift to offer the world.

If Jane Siberry is new to your ears, you are in for a treat. Her airy, delicate sound is singularly her own. Jane is beautiful. We can recommend our personal favorite albums as NO BORDERS HERE (1983) and SPECKLESS SKY (1985). Jane's self-titled album (1981) is similar to these two, and the only reason it is not a favorite is that we have not spent years with it as we have these two selections.

THE WALKING (1987) was critically acclaimed. You can disappear into its soundscapes. BOUND BY THE BEAUTY (1989) is a more pop, radio ready release with some catchy numbers. WHEN I WAS A BOY (1993) was co-produced by Brian Eno and Michael Brook and is considered Siberry's most eclectic work yet. Great ambient realms are created in that one.

Next came MARIA (1995) in which Jane performs with a jazz ensemble. Warm piano, bold brass, soft, then powerful. TEENAGER (1996) was Jane's first release on her own label. In this one, you can hear her freedom to do just as she pleases. She even revisits her very first songs. A DAY IN THE LIFE (1997) is an interesting sound collage wherein you actually follow Jane through a day.

NEW YORK TRILOGY (1999) is composed of three albums of material from three nights in 1996 at the Bottom Line nightclub in New York City. The last of which is songs for the Christmas season. In fact, much of Jane Siberry's more recent material reflects her faith. HUSH (2000) is made up of traditional American and Celtic selections, like "O' Shenandoah," "Old Man River," and "Streets of Laredo." SHUSHAN THE PALACE: HYMNS OF EARTH (2003) is a religious release of Christian hymns with an Early Music feeling.

After that nonsecular album, Jane Siberry gave away her possessions and changed her identity to Issa. She released DRAGON DREAMS and WITH WHAT SHALL I KEEP WARM? as Issa, as well as a third unreleased album. Among other themes, these address living with simplicity and character in nature. They flow like poetry.

Learn more about Jane at AllMusic.com and Wikipedia. Read about what she is up to now and why she has given you her music for free in recent articles at the Times Online, New York Times, and The Globe and Mail (photos).

For such an accomplished artist to give her work to the world in this way is a selfless gift. Thank you, Jane Siberry, you lovely woman.

Mojo Nixon Offers All His Songs for Free for Limited Time

Mojo Nixon offers all his songs for free, for three weeks, USA IP addresses only.

"One of the most outsized personalities on college radio in the '80s, Mojo Nixon won a fervent cult following with his motor-mouthed redneck persona and a gonzo brand of satire with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Nixon had a particular knack for celebrity-themed novelty hits ("Elvis Is Everywhere," "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child," "Don Henley Must Die"), but he was prone to gleefully crass rants on a variety of social ills ("I Hate Banks," "Destroy All Lawyers," "I Ain't Gonna Piss In No Jar"), while celebrating lowbrow, blue-collar America in all its trashy, beer-soaked glory. All of it was performed in maximum overdrive on a bed of rockabilly, blues, and R&B, which earned Nixon some friends in the roots rock community but had enough punk attitude -- in its own bizarre way -- to make him a college radio staple during his heyday...." - Steve Huey, All Music Guide

New 2-CD Release from Josh Woodward

"I'm thrilled to announce that my latest releases are now available! There are two albums packaged as one, called 'The Simple Life'. The songs are from the frantic sessions over the past 8 months, and the versions here are vastly improved over the demos I put out. I've never been happier with anything I've released - I hope you enjoy it, too.

"As usual, you can download the MP3s for free, and you can also purchase a physical CD (name your own price!) to help support independent music."
