El Dia de los Muertos
This is my little blog moment to celebrate the lives of those who went before. There is a saying among genealogists that goes something like, "Those who do not preserve the memories of their ancestors are likely to be forgotten themselves." We all know another saying, "If we do not remember history, we are doomed to repeat it."The Day of the Dead is an ancient Aztec celebration in memory of deceased ancestors, celebrated on November 1 (All Saints' Day) and November 2 (All Souls' Day). The holiday is especially popular in Mexico, Guatemala, the Philippines and Brazil, where it is a national holiday. It is a day, not unlike the US American Memorial Day, where we honor the dead.

News to me: Calaveras, (skulls) are not just the name for the candy of the celebration, but also for humorous poems and songs about the dead written around El Dia de los Muertos.
Much of the modern world looks down on honoring the dead as macabre or morose. Honoring those who fell in battle or heros of the arts, science and industry is still glorious, but honoring your own dead should be somber and private? The Day of the Dead doesn't follow that rule. It celebrates the happiness, struggles, personalities, achievements and spirit of life of those who are no more.
Simon and Garfunkel - Bookends Theme
[excerpt from Piccadilly Records]
Honoring my dead is different this year. I lost several memento mori in the flood this summer. There has been so little understanding about having lost sentimental items, tangible memories that reinforce the memories your mind holds. Should I even have to explain that photos, letters and tiny objects of sentiment have value? The USA, land of plenty, seems to be battling itself about all its possessions. Piles of stuff do not have the same value as a great-grandmother's locket, letters from a dad out at sea or a grandad's recipes to me. [Ever see Citizen Kane?]

Happy Birthday!
Extra special HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to Blogio teammates Perri and Fausto. Send them your happy regards or post a comment here for them. Perri's birthday is in late October and Fausto's is in early November. When is yours?
Three years ago on this day, a wonderful project was born. It was Comfort Stand Recordings, a totally free netlabel. In its brief lifespan, that netlabel laid down the example for others to follow. Comfort Stand released 80 full length and 2-CD recordings, as well as 18 singles and EPs.
To celebrate its first anniversary "of being online, providing free music and sharing the love," artists put together a 2-CD celebration release on the label. Oddio Overplay celebrated by creating a playlist of more than 100 birthday songs found on the web. Three years later, only 65% of the songs were still there, so I updated it for you today. The list now weighs in with more than 200 birthday tracks. Play them for yourself on your birthday or your un-birthday!
Also, SongFight.org has a collection of birthday songs, Various Artists - Birthdays and Breakups.
While the Comfort Stand offices may have closed, the music is still available online. Equally important, the sister label, WM Recordings is still going strong. Marco Kalnenek [Weirdomusic] worked on and was a recording artist for Comfort Stand. It inspired him to create WM Recordings to release even more free and legal music to the world. They have already shared 52 releases. Happy Birthday to all of us!
Also, SongFight.org has a collection of birthday songs, Various Artists - Birthdays and Breakups.

More Halloween Audio
:: September post of Halloween audio
:: JohnRozum.com and Senses Working Overtime are both running Halloween treats for every day of October!
:: brainsaw - Music for the Paranoid Schizophrenic is a dark, industrial record with serious leanings toward Halloween. Despite the titles relating to Cold War Soviet times, such as "Stalin's Will," "Proletariat," "Gulag (Welcome to Hell)", "Patriots Make Great Cannon Fodder" and "Death to the Enemies of the People," this could very easily be added to your Halloween mix
:: Pieces of Flair hosting their Zombie Song Off, wherein contributors submit thier own zombie tunes! [I'm a sucker for strings, so leaning towards the lxox track. Oh but the metal, and the live one, and the faux '80s. Glad I get to love them all and not choose just one.]
:: NEW! Royal Oakland Gramophone Company presents "Hallowe’eny E’en"
a 3.5 hour Halloween special
Filed under: collage, noise, electronic, improvisation, live-mix, experimental, spoken, holiday theme
:: NEW! Yewknee.com's mixes Songs For Spooks and Pure Terror
:: Paul's Rambling's has posted this year's Halloween lounge mix, Music to Watch Ghouls By. Beware of the pumpkin martini!

Bobby "Boris" Pickett's original "Monster Mash" and three other cuts from the record
Old Time Radio, longtime Oddio favorite, hosts Arch Oboler's Plays and many other old radio horror programs [Arch Oboler's Plays recommended by Mr. Boh of Baltimore]
Silence! Silence of the Lambs, the musical, with such titles as "Put the F**king Lotion in the Basket" and " In the Dark with a Maniac," seems spot on for Halloween terror.
Halloween Stomp features 27 tracks of jazz and big band dance music for a haunted house party. Provided by Wonderful Wonderblog.
Bride of Monster Mashup, wherein ghouls mix up Halloween classics, spooky strangeness and scary throat grabbers, is a available for download as separate tracks or as a full 80 minute mix.

Calling All Fiends
CALLING ALL FIENDS, a collection of frightening, damaging and disturbing music conjured up for Halloween, is now available at OddioOverplay.com.
Halloween is meant to be scary, right? Year after year we dust off the old, silly, novelty records. While they are fun, they not at all frightening. Oddio Overplay put the challenge to musical artists the world over to create Halloween music that is "frightening, damaging and disturbing." No "Monster Mash," instead creepy soundtracks to a fiendish Halloween. They succeeded with CALLING ALL FIENDS, two hours of original music! Some of these pieces will creep you right out of your skin.
featuring: 8m2stereo, [Not] Daniel Johnston (with Daniel Johnston), Brian and Harlan, Bureaucratica, Caühaüs, Click Click Click, Grant, Jeffrey Letterly, Lee Rosevere, Lenkei, Limonadiac, Mark Harvey, Mr. Fab and His Bag of Heads, Nigel Simmons, Pharmacom, Rain Station, Roymond, Shirley and Spinoza, Splogman, Stealing Orchestra, Sublinear, The DVDs, The Threshold People, The Waiters, Ton Rückert, Urban Inbreed, Weirdomusic, X-Tokyo-River-God
In 2010, this album was added to the Free Music Archive, so you can download with one click or embed a player like this.

Airplanes Again or Calling All Punks
In the blur of airports and flights, I have been reflecting on music of my youth. Focused in on what was most important after losing most recordings in a flood this summer.Kallie of WeirdoMusic.com said reassuringly that the new collection built from here forward would be the best, because it would be made up of only the best. Maybe he was on to something.
The rarities from my Ralph Records grunt days, the US East Coast punk band demos, my own noise with friends, all those cool little things are hard or more often impossible to replace. However, the things that can be replaced will be loved all the more, I'd wager.
The lost music of your youth might be out there, too. The old desert island disc scenario: what recordings would you want with you, if you were forever stranded? Even stranded in an airport.

Zloty Dawai - Dada Work Chant
released 7 october 2006
WM050: Zloty Dawai - Dada Work Chant
"Take your seat and have another journey into the weird accoustic world of Zloty Dawai. Is it Free Jazz? Is it Noise? The Zloties don’t give a damn. The five guys from Cologne just recorded this one in 4 different takes directly on CD. Totally improvised - no overdubs – no censorship."
released 7 may 2005
WM014: Zloty Dawai - Teleopsis belzebuth
"Cologne-based improv-musicians try to do the impossible: to let go! To forget about their 60's to 90's influences as the independent music-addicts they were and try to do their own sound. Someone said 'Modern Free-Jazz'. Someone said 'Soundtrack-Scores'.
"Fact is: It's totally improvised, uncensored, no overdubs. It´s done directly on CD. So go ahead and just blow your cool!"

Oddio Just Made Searching for Sharity Easier
Vinyl Sharity v1 is a search engine I put together for finding specific artists, songs, releases and so forth on some favorite vinyl sharity websites. Searching blogs and feeds was easy, but I had no engine to search the websites like those in the Vinyl Sharity Network, such as Bellybongo, Podsville and the Vinyl Orphanage. You can use Vinyl Sharity v1 to search online, and if you use the Firefox browser, you can even add it to your search engines on the toolbar! Yay!
Give it a try! If your favorites aren't in there, customize it or make your own!
[If your sharity site or blog did not appear in this search engine, please don't think it is beacause I don't love you. I only added 25 sites.]
I also created the Free and Legal Music search engine. Can you dig it, baby?

Mark Harp Tribute CD
Mark Harp would have turned 50 in 2007. We lost a real musical talent far too soon. What do you think of a tribute CD of covers of Mark's music? Here's hoping folks who admired him and who worked with Mark will come together for this venture.
Listen to 3 hours of my favorite Mark Harp songs from his various bands
Enjoy 24 Hours of Mark's Music organized into free CDs
Then come back with a cover of YOUR favorite? Sounds like a cool early 2007 project, right? It would be freggin fantastic to turn new people on to Mark's works. Please post a comment here, if you are interested in this project, or send me an email. Thanks.
Clark Bars for everybody! xoxo,katya

Charles Magnante and Orch - Fiesta!
Yes, Land of 999 Dances is back! When I was updating his link the Sharity Living Rooms around the Globe page on Oddio Overplay, I checked out the other sharity sites, as well, to be sure that they are still sharing. This fun Command release of classic space age pop accordian is still available from Goofspot. I loaded my copy, and did a little dance around the room. If this record makes someone new smile, then I will be so happy!
Thank you, Goof! This is old news to friends, but I lost a little over 4,000 records in a flood this summer. That included almost all the Command catalog I had collected over the years. This Charles Magnante recording was hard for me to find. Thanks again, Goof!

Ostrowski, Schepkin, Vogelschiess
Composers and performers currently in play here in the bungalow...
Cezary Ostrowski. Polish visual artist, electronica composer, sound designer and journalist, Creative Commons activist, initiator of the Creative Collective, one of the editors of ccMixter.org, founder of the legendary Polish avant-tronic music group Bexa Lala. [bio]
Cezary Ostrowski performs his instrumental opening piece to his opera Music For The Fish.
Sergey Schepkin. Russian-American pianist who has won great acclaim for his performances and recordings of J.S. Bach, and was hailed by The New York Times as "a formidable Bach pianist . . . [who] plays with the passion and drama of a young Glenn Gould."
His official site features Bach mp3s. Although predominantly a performer of the Romantics, Schepkin also delivers the Moderns and especially the mainstream modern Russians with exquisite skill.
Sergey Schepkin performs Andrew Bisset's Conglomerate Fragments for Solo Piano and Cultural Dis-Ease
Charles Graef/ Vogelscheiss. Composer of orchestral, piano and electronic pieces whose website hosts hours of his compositions for film, television, commercial purposes, software demonstrations. His electronic rendition of Saint-Saëns' "Aquarium" is so much fun!
Update: I must not forget composer Sergio Luque who is also in play at the bungalow.

Weirdomusic - Democassette
Weirdomusic - Democassette!!???This morning, I woke up with the song "The Man with the Wooden Eyes" in my head. I couldn't remember who performed it. My sleepy head was rattling through all sorts of New Wave bands. Maybe it was the Urban Verbs, Ultravox, Chrome - who was it? So I did a search online and it turns out to be the awesome Marco Kalnenek, aka Weirdomusic, the brain behind WM Recordings, former project collaborator and one of my favorite people!
Here is his entire February 1990 Democassette!!??? release. I do not know whether this release predates his six years at the conservatory, but there are impressive keyboard segments here. I particularly like them towards the end of "Acid." I sure had fun revisiting this music. Enjoy!
Several tracks also appear on his A Piece of Weirdomusic History. These are the songs Marco contributed to weeks 26 of the fantastic 52 Weeks project from Splogman.com.
"Weirdomusic is the nom-de-plume of 35 year old Marco Kalnenek from Heerlen, the Netherlands. The name was first used for his 1992 cassette release Someweirdomusic and is now the name of Marco's website Weirdomusic.com and all related musical activities.
"Marco started playing the piano at age 9. His first band Foolish Behaviour was formed around 1982, when he started jamming and recording tapes with his pal "Deurie" (Marco Dörenberg) and assorted other friends. Hundreds of hours of music and other noises were recorded in the 12 years that followed. A few cassettes and cd-r's were privately released and a couple of tracks turned up on compilations made by other people.
"In 1994 Marco's interest in writing and recording music started to fade, mainly due to his bad experiences at the Conservatory of Music in Maastricht, where he studied jazz piano for 6 years between 1987 and 1993. Most of Weirdomusic's home recordings from 1982-1994 still survive [and are currently being transferred to archive.org].
"In 2001 two older recordings were remixed by Dutch musician Ton Rückert and Japanese dj Hideo Nakai for an as yet unreleased cd-compilation of Weirdomusic's work. Meanwhile Marco has been experimenting with pc based composing and recording. His first new recording in nearly 10 years was released on the Comfort Stand label in April 2004."

Lea Nicholson - The Concertina Record
Lea Nicholson - The Concertina Record"It was the early seventies and each evening after the Golden Lion pub closed, a number of people would repair back to Nick Kinseys house in Foxton Road, Hoddesdon in order to take drugs and if possible drink more alcohol. Background music would be anything from the then ultra cool Genesis to the Classical. A favourite was the Walter (now Wendy) Carlos "Switched-On Bach" recordings. It was always very clear to me in the drunken haze which so quickly dropped over the Foxton Road proceedings that something along these lines was a possibility for the concertina.
Thus it was that I managed to sober up sufficiently at the beginning of 1975 to make a start and what eventually became The Concertina Record grew out of those sessions.
In early 1976 I signed a deal with Virgin Records...."

Suspicious Cheese Lords 10th Anniversary Concert
The Suspicious Cheese Lords will be holding their 10th Anniversary Concert next Sunday, at which they will showcase works of the group's original composers (there have been four). My friend Gordon's most recent piece is included in the program, a setting he did last fall of a sonnet he wrote when he was about 19, "A rose beheld the sun from summer's wood."
The sonnet garnered praise from noted academics Lindsey Tucker and Zack Bowen when it was new. More recently Skip West, founder and president of the Suspicious Cheese Lords, compared it approvingly with the poetry of Rainer Marie Rilke. SCL premiered this piece last spring, but with little time to learn it confidently, and partly as a result the piece received the only pale note in an otherwise effusive review by a Washington Post music critic, who said it sounded "vague and unsure of itself." They aim to remedy that at next weekend's concert, so be sure to be there! I understand it is sounding great in rehearsal.
"Although the Lords specialize in music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, their repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant to original compositions. From 1998 to 2006, the Cheese Lords served as the choir in residence for major services at the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, DC. Additional service credits include the Cathedral of St. Matthew, Church of the Epiphany, the Church of the Holy Redeemer, and Georgetown University's Dahlgren Chapel. The ensemble assisted in developing 'An Evening at the Tabard Inn,' an event for the Smithsonian Institution's Resident Associates program in which the Cheese Lords provided music contemporary to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and related to the theme of pilgrimage. The Lords' other performance venues have included Washington National Cathedral, the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, the National Gallery of Art, Epiphany Catholic Church (Georgetown), The Church of the Ascension and Saint Agnes, Christ Church (La Plata, Md.), the Cathedral of St. Thomas More (Arlington, Va.), the Old Presbyterian Meeting House (Alexandria, Va.), Christendom College (Front Royal, Va.), and XM Satellite Radio's Live Performance Studio. Their concerts are regularly broadcast on the Vox channel of XM Satellite Radio." -- official website
This concert is in the Washington, DC metro area. Map, directions and further details here.
