The Time Has Come to Say Sayonara

Hi Friends and Readers,

At the tail end of a cross continental relocation. Hurray!

Leaving Oddio Overplay and its associated sites in limbo for a spell. Dot/Al might kick OddioOverplay.com into gear or even revamp it altogether, and the Tod pretty much runs the group already.

Not sure when I'll be back. You know how it goes. We all need breaks from the computers. New year, new location, new projects, new chapter. On to the next adventure for awhile! Yay! See you soon!

Yours,
katya

Unearthed DJ Tricky Projects

DJ Tricky is dead. Well in name, at least. That DJ moved on to a different name and genre, but the Tricky work still remains. Recently, Tricky wrote from the grave about two projects now available online:

Here are some (hip hop) mixes... thousands upon thousands of records over months and months (years ago) went into making these. The mixes are very hip hop/old school oriented. [Many] have heard Cardboard Flava from 1994, but very few have heard the earlier tape from 1992, The Mixology.

http://www.cardboardflava.com

Most of you know about my background in producing/dj'ing under the name DJ Tricky. Killed off the name in 1994 when I started to go in a different direction musically So the name Trick is Offically dead, but starting to archive some of the good crap here and over the years Cardboard Flava and other megamixes have been enjoyed.

And next up will be a project I was involved in from 1992-1993, "Black Mass" - Crazy Wacked out Satanic Metal International Hip Hop Project Band thing with old pals (assembling a double disc for download of it all) and will follow with some [hip hop] produced from 89-94.

http://www.cardboardflava.com/blackmass.html

[Friends and I got a real kick out of the Blackmass recordings! Twelve minutes of snoring even made us laugh. Blackmass got not only a group thumbs up, but started a massive hip hop old school flashback. Lots of fun!]

Ken Nordine's 86th Birthday

Ken Nordine's 86th birthday was January 19th. Let's all send this great artist belated birthday cards.

nordine AT wordjazz.com or via the address below...

"Most Americans are probably familiar with Ken Nordine, even if they don't know it. His rich, deep baritone graces numerous television and radio ads. His most creative work, however, is reserved for his "word jazz," which marries liquid, free-association ruminations with jazzy instrumental backing. Active in radio since the 1950s, he's recorded numerous albums and syndicated broadcasts, and has even collaborated with the Grateful Dead.

"Nordine got his start as a radio and television personality in Chicago, where he would sometimes do his raps over jazz records on his poetry show. His first Word Jazz album, from 1957, utilized the Chico Hamilton band (working under the alias of the Fred Katz group). This led to a series of Word Jazz recordings, which -- like the beat poetry from the same era -- looked beyond the conformity of the 1950s to more imaginative and colorful worlds, ones that had room for fantasy and irrationality, and not just mundane reality. He's recorded sporadically ever since, although he does studio recordings as a sideline [Space Age pop classic LP SOUNDS IN SPACE] to his work in radio and commercials. Nordine's soundscapes are best experienced not on his relatively few commercial recordings, but on his syndicated radio shows, 375 of which are available on cassette from Snail Records, Box 285-8C2, Florence, WI 54121." -- All Music Guide biography by Richie Unterberger

Uyghur Field Recordings, volume II

Shirley and Spinoza Internet Radio presents part two of
the Xinjiang: Uyghur Automomous Region field recordings LIVE mix,
Royal Oakland Gramophone: Under a Dim Crescent Moon

download archived show in several formats
[playlist / sourcelist]

For most of 2003, I lived in the northwestern-most province of China - officially known as Xinjiang: Uyghur Automomous Region. I'd received a generous grant to document the folk music (as opposed to the classical muqam music) of the Turkic Muslim cultures traditionally native to the region - focusing mainly on the largest group: The Uyghurs, but also including the Kazakhs and Kyrgyz.

For this show, I'll be live-mixing right to your ears many of these field recordings, which while mostly consist of music, also include ambiences, regional pop & traditional sounds on cassettes & CDs I picked up - plus recordings of shortwave radio.

The field recorded music you'll hear was, with only a few exceptions, performed by common folk (farmers, carpenters, (incl. mystics and beggars)) demonstrating something that's very much a cultural part of everyday life. With east China's ever accelerating blitzkrieg development of it's claimed west though, these cultural traditions are going up in smoke fast.

The recordings were done with head-worn binaural microphones - in yurts, homes, under grape trellises, in mud brick courtyards, orchards and in the streets of oasis towns and villages in areas surrounding the expansive Taklimakan desert.

Several of these recordings - in purer yet more carefully curated form - will be released later this year on the fantastic Sublime Frequencies label. (!!!)

The Ball Sisters Band

The Ball Sisters Band is developing a new website. In case you missed these folks before, please let me assure you that they are fantastic! Link update:

http://www.ballsistersbandtn.com

We are a bluegrass and acoustic group from the hills of East Tennessee. We all live in Rogersville, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The Ball Sisters Band features the award winning musicianship of fiddler Jessica Ball and guitarist/ mandolinist Cris Ball.Their father, Randy Ball, plays guitar, while our friend John Skelton on bass rounds out the group.

Here is some news since I last posted about them at Oddio Overplay.

Jessica has won several fiddle contests, began giving lessons at sixteen, and is now in the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass Program. After spending the Spring semester in The ETSU Pride Band, Jessica was with The ETSU Bluegrass Band for the Fall semester. In January 2005, Jessica was selected to be part of a group of ETSU Bluegrass musicians who toured England and Scotland.

Cris won the National Beginner's Flat Top Guitar Championship at Smithville,TN in 1997 and 1998, as well as many other guitar and mandolin contests. Randy is a published songwriter, and was selected for the Songwriter's Showcase at the 2004 IBMA World of Bluegrass. John is also an accomplished mandolin player. We strive to put a lot of variety into our music, and include bluegrass, old-time, rock and roll and gospel. Our music includes originals, fiddle tunes,hymns, waltzes and more!

Our MP3.com page had over 50,000 plays,and we now have a new mp3 page with Soundclick.com. We are proud that our recordings have been played on radio in the United States, Canada, France, Holland, Ireland, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand. We would like to play for you, but if you are out of our area, we have several recordings available. Our new CD, Rivers and Roads, has just been released on Project One Records. Either live or recorded, we will do our best to provide quality music and family entertainment!

Uncle Neptune Has a Blog!

Yes, all you fans of Uncle Neptune will be pleased to see that he has a brand new blog in 2006! What great news!

"Hello and a very warm welcome to the launch of my song diary. This is my humble attempt to share music with the world, be it songs I have written or renditions of songs that I hold in the very highest esteem. I'll also include some original recordings of artists from the roaring twenties. This is a place for the appreciation for the craftsmanship of song, an ode to the remarkable sounds that were created in the 1920's and the songs that I have written inspired by that time in musical history. If you came in search of magical dexterity on the ukulele, you will be sadly disappointed! I have only to offer to you the songs that help make my world more sweet, and it is my hope that it may do so for you. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!"

[I apologize for being slow to post this. Wanted to get a new pic matching his look on his boxed set. Running on a temporary system right now, so graphics are tricky.]

Downloads Now Playing

What cool releases have you been listening to lately? Today I decided to post at Oddio Bloglines Clippings all the material I download. It has been sitting there since last April, and all it takes to post to it is a click. If I keep up with it, this would help me keep track of sources and to pass along recommended recordings to friends like you.

These four are not listed at that blog, but are in current circulation.

:: Umka I Bronevichok - London
Umka [pronounced Oomka] is a cutie Russian rock artist who offers most of her discography online. She has such a friendly, humorous, laidback approach to music. You honestly believe that she is completely relaxed on stage.

:: Stockfinster - All Becomes Music [Sutemos011]
From Lithuanian netlabel, Sutemos.net comes an hour of songs from Sweden billed as easy listening / electronic / ambient. Several of these Stockfinster songs grapple with death and mourning, yet are still somehow light. There are keenly human ingredients in this recording, and the samples and liner notes breathe accentuate this.

The label writes, "This is possibly the most sincere release on Sutemos which every note, every moment is pulsating with the human touch, with love and simplicity. We hope that ALL BECOMES MUSIC will be your faithful friend during calm and cozy autumn evenings."

:: Milieu - Stray Trains [EAR019]
"Milieu has a special way with making sounds unique to his style. abusing his drum lines with rigorous trips to and from old, dusty, obsolete tape decks, sipping tea, petting cats, that sort of thing. Stray Trains is a warm and pleasant listen from a happily magical Milieu." - Earstroke netlabel

Listening to this release unleashed a rush of happy memories of breakdancing with Debbie, Tommy, and Kenny to songs like Kraftwerk's "Tour de France" in the early '80s. I couldn't contain myself on the track "Paddyscapes." This hour-long release is not a typical download for me, but there are those attractive elements.

:: Samodelia - Trance [OUIM009]
One more hour of electronica. This time, the aptly named TRANCE by the group Samodelia on the Ouim netlabel in Bulgaria. Straight ahead trance, just like you would hear on Philosomatika Internet Radio¹. (Hey, Ouim just posted a new release today!)

¹ Internet radio stations come and go, but rock solid Philosomatika has been doing this around the clock since the 1990s. Highly recommended for trance that will increase your worker productivity.

Among the Best Music Links Ever

Lee Maddeford and associates offer such quality, quantity and variety, you are sure to be an instant fan. Lee wrote a humble little note to the Oddio Overplay site on Dec 25th, and his works have been playing ever since.

"On this site you'll find over 150 pieces I've written and recorded ranging from pop tunes to film music, electronic music to childrens songs.... Please have a listen."

I've been reviewing the scores and have just been wrapping my head around this work. Rather than write up a full introduction, I feel compelled to get the news out to you about the site. The chamber music, gypsy tunes, jazz pieces, brass and woodwinds, and piano are gorgeous. Visit the site and fall in love with Lee Maddeford and friends as I have.

Florida Folklife Collection

Florida Folklife Collection offers two CDs and several other online recordings spanning more than fifty years of Florida folk music. WMFU DJ Charlie played a track on his Monday show, clueing the rest of us in to this nifty site. You can listen to his 2005 shows and check out his playlists over at WMFU. Charlie's show is the best way to start the week, I tell ya what!
