Dealing with Online Harassment
Hi folks. If you are ever harassed by someone online, there are actions you can take against them. Here are some things I have learned along the way. If you know the region where the offender actually lives, then you can also work with the region's local law enforcement agencies.
1. Report Spoofing
2. Report Harassment
3. Report Terms of Service Violations
4. Submit Tips and Information
-------------------------------
1.) REPORT SPOOFING
-------------------------------
If the offender has ever imitated you or someone you know online by posting as you or ever claiming to be you, then it is a crime called "SPOOFING" and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the USA asks that a complaint be filed.
FBI Cyber Investigations

FBI Internet Crime Online Complaint Form

You are also encouraged to report SPOOFING, STALKING AND OTHER FORMS OF ONLINE HARASSMENT to Wired Safety, the world's largest online safety and help group.
http://www.wiredsafety.org/911/index.html
-------------------------------
2.) REPORT HARASSMENT
-------------------------------
If the harassment includes threats of violence, call the police. If the harassment is defaming in nature, save and document the harassment. Copy and paste defaming messages that were sent over instant messengers, save emails, and save defamatory blog posts. Be sure to log the dates and times. You can even install monitoring software that will assist in the documentation of the abuse.
- MAIL: To report unwanted mail [not email] you have received from this individual, The United States Postal Inspection Service welcomes your complaint.
http://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/
- EMAIL: To report malicious email, check the header of the email for information about what ISP the abuser is using. You can then report the harassment to the abuser's ISP. To find this information follow these instructions for your specific email program.
http://www.spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/19.html
- EMAIL THROUGH ONLINE EMAIL SERVICES [like Yahoo or Hotmail]: "Contact their email provider. Almost all email providers have terms of service in place that does not allow their users to use email for this purpose. To determine who is providing their email service, look at the email address from the cyberbully. The name after the @ symbol will tell you. Go to their Web site and search for their terms of service. Somewhere in there is usually a link to report abuse. Often there is a "report abuse" link on the contact page on the Web site." -- source: http://familyinternet.about.com/od/internetsafety/a/harassedonline_2.htm?terms=reporting+abuse
- STALKING: "Cyberstalking is a specific kind of harassment. The Department of Justice 1999 study on the subject defines it as 'the use of the Internet, e-mail, or other electronic communications devices to stalk another person. Stalking generally involves harassing or threatening behavior that an individual engages in repeatedly, such as following a person, appearing at a person's home or place of business, making harassing phone calls, leaving written messages or objects, or vandalizing a person's property.' CYBERSTALKERS FREQUENTLY follow their targets around the net, frequenting in chat rooms, message boards, newsgroups or mailing lists in which the target participates. At times they will also attempt to form relationships with those who are friendly with the target in order to get more information about the target." -- source: http://www.haltabuse.org/help/isit.shtml

-------------------------------
3.) REPORT TERMS OF SERVICE VIOLATIONS
-------------------------------
You can also report violations against terms of service with any web service he has used for malicious intent, such as mail services, blog hosts, Internet service providers, bulletin boards, mailing lists and so forth. WITH EVERY ACCOUNT HE MAKES, HE AGREES TO TERMS OF SERVICE WHICH PROHIBIT THE ABUSES HE PERPETRATES. These complaints can be filed directly with the provider of the service, such as Yahoo or Blogger. THE MORE COMPLAINTS, THE STRONGER THE CASE AGAINST THE OFFENDER.
Every action taken online from viewing webpages to sending an email is tagged with your ISP and computer information. This can be easily traced by web service providers to build a case against an offender.

The Coconut Monkeyrocket [and Martinibomb]
GUESS WHAT! The Coconut Monkeyrocket has a brand new CD for sale! It is called With Birds. Hurray! This is a solid CD of fantastic instrumentals the whole family can enjoy. Old-timers enjoy hearing new twists on familiar sounds, adults enjoy the seamless beauty of fun pieces, and kids enjoy the bouncy happy beats. This is the feel-good CD of 2007.
With Birds features cool new delicious tracks that are certain to become favorites, such as Juicy Jungle, Bumblebee, Snufflin' Dynamo, Fad Machine, Square Beer, Electrodomestico, Moonbeams and Destination Goo. The Coconut Monkeyrocket really proves himself to be a most fun modern lounge artist. This CD will be among my very favorites for years to come.
In addition to those new tracks, you will hear some favorite tunes you already love. Some are from past projects like these (that also happen to feature fellow artist Martinibomb):

» Split! EP » The Oddio Comp » Comfort Cake
More to enjoy from The Coconut Monkeyrocket and/or Martinibomb:

» Munsterbeat (mp3) » Black Market Mambo (mp3) » Bongo Avenger (mp3)

No to Ban on Minors in DC Clubs

photo: Susie J. Horgan from her new book of early DC punk scene pics, Punk Love
Alec Bourgeois [Dischord Records and Superbad Records] writes:
DC Councilman Moves to Ban Minors from Clubs in DC
In response to a the murder of Talesha Ford outside at a nightclub in DC, Councilman Jim Graham has introduced legislation to ban minors from venues that also serve alcohol. We grieve the senseless loss of another young life on our streets, but feel that to simply ban young people from activities that connect them to the District's rich and diverse musical community is both short sighted and ill-considered.
Since the early '80s, the DC underground has built and maintained a tradition of using musical bonds to support community activism. Organizations like Positive Force have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local shelters, medical clinics, AIDS outreach, rape crisis centers, etc. -- all through all-ages benefit shows sponsored in nightclubs, church halls and non-traditional music spaces alike. Many of the people who volunteer for groups like Positive Force, and many of the members of the bands that play these shows, are teenagers or were turned on to this community while in high school or before.
None can argue whether the inclusion and active participation of "minors" in the Washington music community is one of the major reasons for it's initial rise and continued vibrancy. Nor can one argue that the active participation in a community that cares for it's own, offers positive mentors, cultural diversity, and teaches self reliance has saved many, many more souls from the violent and dangerous distractions on our streets than it has claimed.
Please write to Jim Graham and show your support for all ages access to music in Washington, DC.

Captured! by Robots
Poor Jay Vance's story is that he created some robots, and in Frankenstein style, the bastards turned on him. The beligerent robots pulled out his intestines, and are now holding him hostage. These revolting robots, along with two stuffed apes and three headless horsemen, now force their human prisoner to travel the world playing twisted metal music with them."Captured! by Robots has been through a lot since the human JBOT's capture back in 1996. We have taken the human on ten national tours and have been received as one would expect. The term 'Holy shit' seems to be the most commom expletive uttered. Do you not believe? Oh, you will! C!BR has played with Public Enemy and Flock Of Seaguls (at G-Phoria video game award show in LA), Motorhead, Servotron, Man...or Astroman and many more. C!BR has been featured on UPN's 'Strange Universe' and on the discovery channel's 'Beyond Bizarre', Tech TV, ABC 7 6 o'clock news, and more...
"We have also humiliated JBOT at the Art Institute of San Francisco and at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. C!BR has had articles in The New York Times, Spin Magazine (June 2001), The New Yorker Magazine,Gene Simmons Tongue Magazine, Rocktober (where we were voted the #1 robot rock band), Bikini Magazine, Heeb Magazine, Churn, and many more...." -- from the official site
> Captured! by Robots - We Are Superior
When they came to town here, the bookig agent asked if the "robots" would need hotel rooms, as well. Nope, the robots keep Jay under surveillance in the same single bed hotel room. They do not sleep.
> Captured! by Robots - I Hate Your Techno
Right about now, you may be asking, "What unholy dementia is this?!" Decide for yourself at the official Captured! by Robots website.
