Bubblegum defined:
by All Media Guide

"Bubblegum is a lightweight, catchy pop music that was a significant commercial force in the late '60s and early '70s. Bubblegum was targeted at a preteen audience whose older siblings had been raised on rock & roll. It was simple, melodic, and light as feather -- neither the lyrics or the music had much substance. Bubblegum was a manufactured music, created by record producers that often hired session musicians to play and sing the songs. Frequently, the session musicians were given a fake band name to give the illusion that they were a real group."

Dagos, Gitarrenarmee and More

Enjoying Dagos and Gitarrenarmee today, and thought I should should share them with you. Here they are with other current WM Recordings releases.

Spheriot - Livingroom Orbits

"Spheriot is a one-man project. There has never been any kind of concept in the music - or any aim to sound like this or that. It just evolves from the songs I have always been writing on my guitar..."
sample mp3: 03. Mindless

Necronomikon Quartett - Input

"The members of Necronomikon Quartett repeatedly discussed this issue but they really can not offer any description or label for their music. All they can say is that the songs have no words and the band uses guitar, bass, drums and sometimes keyboards/sequenzer, cello, theremin, percussion, voice, marimbaphon, kazoo and rotating tubes."
sample mp3: 01. Sofawende

Lee Rosevere - Play 2

"... the second in a series of releases by Lee Rosevere that focus on experimental, ambient and imaginary soundtrack works."
sample mp3: 01. Stare On An Empty House

Nambavan - Chechnya on a Dance Floor (pt.2)

"... a companion release to Chechnya on a dance floor, Nambavan's first release on WM Recordings. Twenty untitled tracks without voice, about 50 minutes of dance."

Doron Deutsch - Big Bright Lights

"
Modern space electro-jazz.... This album, is a sci-fi sort of a story, where I played everything, it moves from electronic to guitar and bass sounds, to create the right mood."
sample mp3:
01. Bright Lights

Dagos - Ten years backwards

"As for the kind of music we play we think there is only one thing to be said about it: think about the sixties! Dago is an american slang word which immigrants of italian origin living in the Usa in the '20 used to be called by."
sample mp3: 01. Love's But a Dream

René Vis - Traded Time

"All tracks written and put together by René Vis at home in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Equipment: Yamaha QY20, samples, Olympus DW90 and Samsung YP-MT6."
sample mp3:
01. Teen-ager man-ager

Gitarrenarmee - Composing After Playing Part 1-4

"The 'Gitarrenarmee' (Guitar Army) does not stand for militarism, not even for discipline. The ensemble is a free union, which exists more in the heads of the four musicians than in the real music landscape.... No musical piece resembles another, no live-set is performed twice."
sample mp3:
01. Composing After Playing part 1

Zloty Dawai - Dada Work Chant

"Take your seat and have another journey into the weird accoustic world of Zloty Dawai. Is it Free Jazz? Is it Noise? Totally improvised - no overdubs - no censorship."
sample mp3: 05. Dada Work Chant

Muzic and Mog

Two music communities you might enjoy:

(1) Muzic: This is the newest division of the MP3 4U realm. Muzic is a spot for artists to promote their Internet Archive songs, and for listeners to check out the best songs.

(2) Mog: Three things especially appealing about Mog: artists [including celebs] are blogging and interacting there, secondly, all individual blogs can be viewed as one big, interesting blog, and thirdly, you can find fellow moggers right in your region.

Classic DC Punk Pics

collection of classic harDCore photos by Susie (Josephson) Horgan"In the fall of 1980, Susie J. Horgan got a job at the Georgetown Häagen-Dazs while in her first semester of a photography class. The ice cream shop was managed by a local fresh-faced kid with a square cleft chin by the name of Henry Rollins. Within days, Susie was shooting class assignments at the shop which marked the beginning of her involvement with the D.C. punk scene, as well as a career in photography. Punk Love is a unique testament of the birth of D.C. hardcore, a raw document of the musicians inventing a new punk sound and a fan-base that absorbed it. At once intimate and authentic, definitive and iconic, Horgan’s photography seizes the youthful energy and spirit generated from this period in punk rock. The images in Punk Love not only reveal a sense of urgency, but also a straight-shooter collectiveness and self-respect that were the focal points of the D.C. scene." [more]

Susie shot some of the most famous Dischord pics

Collaboration at MungBeing

MungBeing is a cutting edge online bimonthly magazine published under a Creative Commons license. The theme of MungBeing issue 12 is collaboration. Feast your eyes and ears on 56 pages of collaborative efforts in writing, painting, drawing and music. The music includes a spoken piece with background music by Matt Love, who was responsible for several of the tracks on the Calling All Fiends release at Oddio Overplay [especially Bureaucratica and The Waiters].

The most ambitious project is The Salted Earth Letters, a novella by KD Bryan, Tim Kirk, Ian Donnell Arbuckle and Cavendish. There's also a wonderful interview with Frank Warren, America's Most Trusted Stranger and the founder of PostSecret. And, in addition to the other fine musical projects, we are thrilled to present a CD-length archive of experimental audio works from the 1980s by renowned Dutch musicians Harold Schellinx and Ronald Heiloo.

Mr. Mike Watt

Mike WattMike Watt is an American bass guitarist, singer and songwriter.
"He is best-known for co-founding the punk rock bands The Minutemen and fIREHOSE; as of 2003, he is also the bassist for the reunited Iggy Pop & The Stooges and a member of the art rock/jazz/punk/improv group Banyan as well as many other post-Minutemen projects.

"Though Watt has not had much mainstream success or visibility, he is often cited as a key figure in the development of American alternative rock: the Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicated their hugely successful Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) to Watt. Throughout his career he has been known for his inventive, melodic playing; his basslines are often quite distinctive." [more...]
In other words, Mike Watts is an innovative, influential and super cool guy. Here are some things he is involved with that available for your ears right now.

Corndogs.org - live and rare audio and video from various Mike Watt incarnations [promoted at Oddio Overplay for about three years now]

The Watt From Pedro Show - radio show available from website or by podcast [rss]

More Watt projects can be found at his website and his MySpace page.

One such project is Funanori, which evidentally means seaman in Japanese. [Any Navy kid seeing that Watt was born in Portsmouth, VA will guess right off that at least one of Mike's parents was with the US Navy.] Kaori from The Go! Team will be playing Okinawan style shamisen, and says that it will be a "Shamisen hard rock band." [I'm guessing something like God of Shamisen.] Looking forward to hearing more from that one!

Enjoy all the great Mike Watt listening. Jazz fans will enjoy his radio show, especially, and if thinking about the shamisen now has you craving that sound, then you might also enjoy the Japan and Okinawa playlist at Oddio Overplay. [m3u or smil or flash player]

Optiganally Yours and 808 Mistake

Optiganally Yours is a band featuring the Optigan. What's that? Well...

In the early 70's, Mattel devised this OPTIcal orGAN to play back the sounds of REAL instruments, encoded on celluloid discs like concentric rings of movie soundtrack.

Listeners of WFMU know them well, and you can too by visiting their website, mp3 page and MySpace page.

Rob and Pea who make up the band have another project called 808 Mistake. An 808 is Roland TR-808 drum machine that was very popular in the 1980s. This college project is news to me, and it has me grinning. 808 Mistake is also on MySpace with four gems for download. Just added "I Like Monkeys" to a cd-r for a 9-year old friend. Fun stuff!
